Once Rose Fisher makes a decision, that’s it. End of story.

Like when her ex, Patrick, dumped her out of the blue, then showed up with a super hot, tatted up sex kitten on his arm. Then it was over for good. The end. Poof. Dead to her. Except he was everywhere — down the hall, at the bar with their friends, worming his way into her dreams.

But with their friends paired off, they’re left alone more and more. Rose is determined to keep him friendzoned — doesn’t matter that he stares at her with a smolder that drops all panties in a ten foot radius. She’s over him, and she’ll prove it by getting back into the dating game, Patrick be damned.

Patrick Evans is no stranger to consequences. When your mother walks out, your dad drifts away. When you leave home, you’re on your own. And when you run away from the girl you love, you lose her. He finally has an opportunity to rebuild the bridge he burned, and it’s not one he’ll take for granted. But he’ll have to fight for her, even if it hurts. Even if it means he’ll walk away brokenhearted. Because deep down, he knows that she’s it for him.

The trick will be to get her to admit she feels it too.

tina thoughts a review for you

How do I even begin to explain my love for this book?

The story between Tricky and Rose is like the dying embers of a fire. If left alone, it could die away completely, leaving charred remains, or with one small breathe of life, it can become a raging inferno of passion and warmth. My heart had always been a bit broken from the failed first chance between these two. When I started reading LAST CALL, there was a twinge of pain in my heart and I wondered if Staci was going to break it even more. Every time something would happen there would be another twinge and then another. I doubted where she was taking me but in the end I realized she wasn’t breaking my heart. Instead Staci sewed it back together and made is whole again.

This book makes you feel BIG time. So let me share my thoughts about LAST CALL through my emotion…

  1. Annoyance. When you read a book in dual POVs you get the big picture affect as well as the emotional turmoil. Being able to see and understand both Tricky and Rose’s thoughts and emotions just made me crazy. I wanted to smack them both upside the head and make them see what they could be. The annoyance displayed my investment in these two and my hope for something beautiful.
  2. Jealousy. Let me tell you… This book makes me green with envy. I love every single person in this book. I want every single secondary character to come alive and be my friends forever. Their friendships and comradery is something that people long for. I was also jealous of Rose. Because… dayum that Tricky. Tricky has skyrocketed straight into my top 5 book boyfriends of all time. He is kind, loyal, and perfect. Add in a smokin’ body covered in tattoos and a smile that lights you up inside… Perfect.
  3. Hope. Throughout the entire story, from cover to cover, all you can do is place the fragile hope in Staci’s hands. There is a lot of trust that takes place in that author and reader relationship but the reward far outweighs the risk. There is a beautiful thread of hope and excitement woven in this story that gives the reader something to hold onto.
  4. Passion. This book is FULL of passionate encounters, both negative and positive. When these characters feel something, it is with their entire being. They are passionate about their hatred and their love. That in turn made me very passionate about the outcome of this book. Everything happens for a reason and being able to understand the raw emotion behind those actions leave a mark on your heart.
  5. Obsession. The final emotion is by far the strongest. You know when you see the characters you love working through their issues and trying to stand on solid ground, you become obsessed with where the story leads them. I guess to say I was “invested in the outcome” is a less passionate way of saying it. Seeing everything from the emotion of the story to the reaction of the characters, your hope is intertwined in a way that is slightly terrifying and exciting.

Staci Hart rocked it. Tricky and Rose have the perfect story that embodies what they needed and what they had to do. This book is forever on my top recommendation list for years to come. LAST CALL is a story of second chances and learning to let the fear go. Those are some of my favorite themes, coupled with some of my favorite book people, well, the combination is perfection. I tip my hat to the Bad Habits gang, sad to see them go, but oh so satisfied in what has been!

With a Twist

Love is somewhere near the bottom of Lily Thomas’ list of life goals, right next to competitive eating and underwater cave diving. She’s spent six years pirouetting and pliéing her way up the ranks of the New York Ballet with her eye on the prize and love in the back seat. But now that Blane Baker — Lily’s long time crush — is finally single, she’ll throw her rules out the window without thinking twice.

Reality with Blane isn’t as epic as the fantasy she imagined, and the truth sends her spinning straight into the arms of the man she never knew she’d always wanted.

West Williams has been friends with Lily since the day she moved into their building and he saved her armoire from a swift, sudden death by staircase. Their friendship has always been easy, the boundaries clearly defined. With neither of them willing to risk their relationship, they’ve drifted happily through the years as companions, never considering more.

That is, until they do. And that realization changes everything.

Chaser

Everyone knows you should never say never.

Cooper Moore never saw Maggie Williams coming. She was just his best friend’s little sister, the curly-haired, freckle-faced girl from Mississippi who was absolutely off limits. And he never thought about her any other way — not until he saw her that night, broken and brave. From that moment on, he knew he’d do whatever it took to protect her, even if it meant he had to stay away.

Maggie never expected to find her fiancé banging her maid of honor an hour before she was set to walk down the aisle, but life’s funny that way. The only option to save her sanity is to get the hell out of Jackson and move to New York where her brother lives. The only downside: Cooper is there too. And she just doesn’t know if she can stay away from him — the filthy rich, dead sexy playboy who’s allergic to commitment.

The second Maggie sees him again, she realizes he’ll be impossible to resist. Luckily, commitment is the last thing on her mind, and Cooper is the perfect escape. As long as she can keep her heart in check, everything will be just fine. Because she can never have feelings for him. Or at least that’s what she’ll keep telling herself.

Chaser is a standalone romantic comedy and book 2 of the Bad Habits series.

 ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom; she has three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife; even though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f and ends with k.

From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

REVIEW: Live Without Regret (Touch of Fate #3) by KL Grayson

L.O.V.E.

How can those four letters cause so much pain? Everyone talks about how great love is, with all the flowers and the butterflies, but that wasn’t my experience at all. Love wasn’t something I wanted or even needed.

Nope.

Been there.

Done that.

I have the sweat, tears and blood-soaked T-shirt to prove it.

The jagged edges of a damaged heart tell the story of my past, but just because I’ve sworn off love doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy men. Because I do. Few things feel better than being tangled up with a hard body. Grabby hands, moans of pleasure, and sighs of happiness are all part of a well-balanced diet, as long as no strings are attached.

Wild, crazy sex—yes.

Love—hell no.

But then Connor Jackson came into my life.

He’s the complete opposite of my ex. From his shaggy hair, scruffy beard, sexy tattoos, all the way down to his Chucks T’s.

I want Connor.

The only problem—Connor wants forever.

But forever doesn’t exist. It can be taken away in the blink of an eye, and this is one heartbreak I know I wouldn’t be able to survive.

tina thoughts a review for you

KL Grayson is one of my favorite authors. Anything she writes, I will read. When the details of Live Without Regret started to circulate and I learned more about the storyline, to say I was intrigued was a tame idea. In the KL’s debut novel, Where We Belong, we meet Harley and Tyson, two friends who come back after years apart for their second chance, a couple that is obviously perfect together. What I never thought about was the woman Tyson choose over Harley in the beginning of the story, the one he left behind when he went back for his second chance with his true love. When I realized that this Britt was THAT Britt, I was so curious. I think it would be safe to say that most readers do not think about the fate of the one left behind, the one who is obviously not the perfect choice, especially when they are not as active in the original story. KL takes a character I always saw as a type of villain and makes her a stunning lead character in her own story.

Britt is quite the character. She is a woman that was heartbroken when Tyson left her behind. She was a woman scorned and betrayed, someone who is still reacting to what happened through the way she lives her life. Connor is the man who ensnares Britt and refuses to let her live the way she has been. These two have their own past hurts and hesitancies but together everything seems like it will be ok. I loved reading how Connor pursues Britt. He holds his ground and the results are beautiful and healing.

This is a love story that allows for the brokeness to be addressed and healing to take place. If you have read nay others of KL’s books, this one has a very different feel. The drama and angst feels unlike what I have come to expect from her stories. That difference is no better or worse than what I have read from her. It is just a new side. There is a raw emotion to Britt’s broken heart. This book gives the series a new perspective to explore. I loved the passion that grows between Connor and Britt. Connor is kind and understanding in his pursuit of her heart. He is willing to do whatever Britt needs and stands by her as she works through her hurt and anger. Each secondary character influences the story in their own way, creating a cast of characters you fall in love with. I am hoping to see more of this couple and the people we meet in this book in future Touch of Fate stories.

tina thoughts a review for youEver since The Consequence of Loving Colton, I have been curious about Reid and what would happen in his story. His antics were hilarious and his personality was so different from everyone else you meet in the series. I always wondered what kind of woman would be his perfect match and could never come up with one. When you meet him originally, he seems like so many things rolled into one. He is charismatic and charming, a ladies man who cannot turn off said charm. He is also a bit ridiculous (he is Max’s brother after all) and his plans and attempt to help his friends would usually go up in flames, his history with Grandma is the perfect example. His lack of common sense in some areas made me roll my eyes and want to just pat his head and say “Bless you heart.” When I started reading The Consequences of Seduction, I knew that this story could go in so many different directions. Rachel Van Dyken did a great job of combining a sweet love story with her signature rom-com style.

Reid is quite an interesting character. He has suffered unspeakable yet hilarious things in the past two books and it seems like this book is his time to shine and show a completely different side of who he is. At first he seems to be a bit shallow, a man in the spotlight used to getting what he wants. But his game is off and he cannot seem to get back into it. When Max interferes and a publicity stunt/bet goes awry, Reid is forced to lean on his new PR person, Jordan. These two are unlikely lovers that it is both refreshing and hilarious to watch unfold. Where he is suave and perfection embodied; she is a train wreck attempting to keep from spilling anything and everything on her blouse (I am sure so many woman can relate to her defining characteristics. ha!). Where she is strict and planning ahead, attempting to form a plan that will bring success, he is living his own life and attempting to poke the bear at every turn. These two go head to head but something happens that makes the attraction undeniable. Opposites attract, but when it comes down to it, how opposite are they really. Watching them learn to accept what is happening and muddle through the intense emotion and stressful reality is filled with both heartfelt and absolutely hilarious moments.

As with all the books in the series, we see the whole gang once again. Max is true to form, stirring up trouble and being so ridiculous that he makes some sense. Becca is attempting to reign him in and balance his crazy. Milo and Colt are living in blissful matrimony. Jason is lurking in the sidelines, attempting not to catch the love bug everyone seems to have. When these characters get together, there is nothing short of laugh out loud scenes that make you wonder how they put up with each other. Then one moment comes along in which the depth of their friendship is displayed that makes everything fall into place. These secondary characters add so much to Reid and Jordan’s story, allowing the book to come to life.

I was completely satisfied with how this book went. I did not know exactly what to expect, but Rachel delivered a great love story that kept me laughing and sighing throughout. I am excited to see glimpses of their continued love affair in Jason’s book. And I am REALLY interested in Jason’s story. We get a small glimpse at the end of the book and WOW, it is going to be a good one. The Consequence of Seduction is the perfect third addition to the series and a story that will endear Reid even more to the hearts of readers. He finally catches a break from all the terrible antics of the group and his chance at love turns into something beautiful and challenging, the avenue by which the best things come in life.

The lady who fell in love

excerpt alert

I wasn’t nervous. Please. The nervous guy was always played by a dude who had no fashion sense, had never kissed a girl, and thought that foreplay was an actual play—in baseball.

I had killer fashion.

Had kissed tons of girls—even secured my first by the age of four from a six-year-old riding the bus to school.

And foreplay was my specialty. I like to think that some men are just gifted in that area—not to boast, but I’m one of them.

Oh, and I was a hell of a baseball player.

So that weird, shaky feeling currently residing in my stomach, slithering its way up my chest? Heartburn.

I popped two Tums.

“Hey, you okay?” Jordan asked. Her big brown eyes were makeup free—making them look even prettier—more natural. She’d given up on her hair so it was wildly cascading in every direction known to mankind, giving her a sex kitten look I wasn’t at all comfortable her sporting outside my apartment.

“Yeah.” I coughed. “Heartburn.”

“Weird. I wonder why you have heartburn after all those shots, five slices of pizza, and three glasses of red wine?”

I grinned. “Beats me.”

She rolled her eyes and grabbed the remote from my hand.

“What are you doing?” I asked calmly, trying to keep my voice from shaking.

“Changing the channel?” she answered without looking at me. “The movie ended an hour ago and you usually go to bed at eleven, so . . .”

“But this is date night.”

“Uh-huh, and now date night is over. I’ll tell you what.” She turned and tucked her legs beneath her. “Since you’re new at this whole dating thing, I’ll give you a free pass and let you in on a little secret.”

“I’m listening.” Okay, so I was trying to listen while my eyes zeroed in on her low-cut blouse and fringes of the black lacy bra that was peeking from beneath. Focus. Focus. Focus. Did she have pizza sauce on her breast?

“When girls come home from a date, they don’t take a hot shower and run their hands all over their body moaning and groaning and replaying every touch, every caress, every kiss.”

Can’t. Look. Away. I leaned forward. Yup, definitely pizza sauce. “Well, that’s disappointing.”

“Usually, they pour themselves a glass of wine, toss off their tall heels, turn on the TV, put on their sweats, and read while New Girl plays in the background.”

How was it possible she wasn’t aware she had food on her chest?

“Reid, are you listening?”

“Of course I am!” I nodded. “Wine, heels, TV, books, New Girl.” I know, neat trick, right? Just pull the details out of what they said and repeat them. Works nine times out of ten. Unless you’re Max. If you’re Max, you usually just get punched, because he tends to brag about the fact he remembered in the first place.

“What?” Jordan looked down. “What are you staring at?”

“Sauce.”

“Huh?”

“Sauce.” I pointed. “Right there.”

Jordan rolled her eyes. “I’m not falling for that trick where you point and I look down and you hit me in the face. How old are you, ten?”

“No, seriously.” I moved forward. “You have pizza sauce right here.” I swiped it with my thumb and then licked it off.

“That should be gross,” she breathed.

“I know.”

“But it was kind of sexy.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying ‘I know.’”

I smirked. “Sorry . . . oh, look, you have something right here too.”

This time she did look down. And my ten-year-old self cheered as I knocked her in the chin and said, “Gotcha.”

Defeated, her shoulders slumped forward. “I deserved that.”

“I couldn’t help myself.” I watched in a hypnotic trance as her tongue sneaked out and teased her lower lip. It was the perfect moment for a kiss, but the line had been . . . skewed. I wasn’t sure if it was okay, in the privacy of my apartment, to actually kiss her. I mean, I’d kissed her, but this felt different, more intimate.

“This is the part”—Jordan leaned forward and gripped my shirt with both hands—“where you either kiss me or cough awkwardly, make an excuse, scratch your balls, and cower back in your bedroom.”

“Wow, so many choices,” I mused, meeting her halfway. “Eenie, meenie, minie—” Our mouths met in a frenzy. She tasted like wine and pizza.

Holy shit, it was hotter than it should have been.

My hands moved to her hips as I tried to pull her onto my lap. But her skirt was too tight.

“Damn it.” I tugged harder and heard a split.

Jordan reared back. “Did you just rip my skirt?”

“Small tear.”

“Rip.”

“No.” I gripped the fabric until it gave with a scratchy tearing sound. “That’s a rip.” With a grin I tossed the discarded remains onto the ground.

Jordan stared at the skirt for a few seconds before wrapping her legs around my torso and fusing her mouth with mine. “You owe me a skirt.”

“Can I rip you out of that one too?”

She laughed against my mouth. I stood, lifting her with me, and walked her backward toward my bedroom.

We looked good. She was half-naked, sexy, I was carrying her around like a badass, and then things went . . . south.

And not a good south.

“Watch out for my shoes—”

I tripped over two spiked heels, sending Jordan flying into the wall. She slid down said wall and landed on the plant—yes, the plant, the one she’d kept alive for all those years.

“My plant!” she yelled. I burst out laughing as remnants of dirt and plant sifted through her hands. “You killed it!”

“Whoa!” I held up my hands and backed up, tripping over the damn shoes again and stumbling to the floor.

I shit you not, Jordan giddyup crawled toward me, faster than lightning, straddled me, and started fighting.

“We’ll get you a new plant!” I yelled as she smacked my chest. I gripped her wrists and flipped her onto her back. “Don’t you think—”

She bucked beneath me.

“—it was probably time to let the plant go? You know, cut the apron strings!”

“It’s not my child!” she wheezed, tuckering herself out.

“Exactly.” I nodded, then released her hand and patted her cheek.

Her eyes went wild.

From the author of the USA Today bestselling A Little Too Far series, the first in an edgy new contemporary romance series that follows a family on the run…

As the oldest son of a Chicago crime lord, Robert Delgado always knew how dangerous life could be. With his mother dead and his father in prison, he’s taking charge of his family’s safety—putting himself and his siblings in witness protection to hide out in a backwater Florida town.

Fourth grade teacher Adri Wilson is worried about the new boy in her class. Sherm is quiet and evasive, especially when he’s around his even cagier older brother. Adri can’t help her attraction to Rob, or the urge to help them both in whatever way she can.

But the Delgados have enemies on two sides of the mob—their father’s former crew and the rival family he helped take down. It’s only a matter of time before someone finds them. And if Rob isn’t careful, Adri could end up in the crossfire…

tina thoughts a review for youLisa Desrocher is a new to me author. I have heard her name in the book world and when I came across this book, described as an edgy contemporary romance, I thought I would give it a shot. Outside The Lines is a book that took a different direction than I was anticipating. After reading the synopsis, I expected a story that was full of fast movement and danger, one that is immersed in underbelly of the crime world in Chicago. What I read was a story that focuses on areas that are usually overlooked in books like these. There is a refreshing focus on the aftermath of danger and tragedy. Lisa takes a look at a group of siblings who are in hiding, waiting for the world to make sense again. This story focuses on the relationship between Rob and Adri, one that is fueled by desire and hope.

Outside The Lines took a more emotional turn than I was expecting and it really works. Throughout this story, despite the fact you see what is happening in Adri and Rob’s POVs, you see the aftermath of a terrible situation. Lisa does a great job of sharing the reality with the readers. We see a group of young adults and a young boy who are all attempting to process something horrific in unique ways. They are trying to reconcile their life now with what it had been. It makes for a more emotional story than I would have thought. Watching Rob work through his guilt and anger is a theme that goes up and down. There is so much going on in his head. He longs to find his footing in the world he finds himself in but his longing to defend his family honor is so ingrained into who he is. The tension is well displayed.

The relationship between Adri and Rob is not an easy one. There are buckets of chemistry and tension but Rob’s secrets hold him back. Adri’s determination to fix Rob and his brother Sherm creates an emotional connection that grows. Their romance is well paced, reflecting the conflict they both feel over what is happening. The reader watches how the relationship brings out a new side to each of the main characters and enhances the overall storyline.

One thing that I appreciated in this book was that there is an overarching storyline that is building as you read. Rob and his siblings are in hiding for a reason. In this book we see some of the details from the world they were forced to leave, but there are so many unanswered questions, ones you are curious about. I enjoy the idea that this theme will carry on throughout the entire series. There is no need to rush a storyline that is churning beneath the surface. As you read the book, you realize that there is something bigger at play. By developing more with the siblings and focusing on the aftermath of the danger they encountered, you allow the overarching story of the crime war in Chicago to develop at a more natural pace, giving the reader more to look forward to in the end. I am intrigued to see where this series leads and to see what happens with all the other siblings in the story!

OTLteaser2excerpt alertChapter 2

Adri

“Is this straight?” Dad asks, peering in the mirror across from the front door and messing with the badge on the breast pocket of his blue shirt.

There is almost no crime on our little island because Dad is legendary for taking down drug rings and poachers, but when it comes to the little things, like pinning his badge on straight, he still needs help.

That’s why I’m here.

When Mom died last spring, I came back from Jacksonville so I could live at home and help Dad. He and Mom were high school sweethearts and married not long after graduation. He’s always been taken care of. I don’t want him to be alone.

I move to where he is and turn him, unpinning the badge and straightening it. I smooth his salt and pepper hair off his forehead and stretch up on my toes to kiss the smooth patch of cheek above the line of his beard. “I seriously doubt they’re going to send the Chief of Police home for a dress code infraction.”

“We’ll see,” he chuckles, giving my blond ponytail a gentle tug. “You ready for your first day influencing the youth of Port St. Mary?”

I was over the moon when I got the call three days ago that Mrs. Martin had had surgery and they needed a long-term sub for her class. Not that I’m happy they hacked out her gallbladder or anything, but her loss is my gain, so to speak.

I come from a long line of educators. Mom was my first grade teacher. Both of her sisters, her father, and her grandfather taught as well. You could say it’s in my DNA. I resisted it for a while, thought I wanted to go into finance, but by my junior year at Clemson I had to finally admit to myself teaching was what I really wanted to do. I changed my major to Education and finished my credential just before Mom died.

Since her death, it’s felt even more urgent to me to teach—like maybe following in her footsteps will somehow keep her spirit alive. But Port St. Mary and the surrounding communities are small, and teaching jobs are pretty scarce. I was afraid I was going to have to try elsewhere come fall. This was a prayer answered…which makes me a little afraid I might have had something to do with poor Mrs. Martin’s gallbladder flaring up. And now it’s starting to feel like one of those “be careful what you wish for” scenarios.

I rub my sweaty palms down my slacks. “What happens if they hate me?”

Dad wraps me in his arms and squeezes me in a bear hug, crushing the air out of my lungs. “They’re going to love you, punkin. Your mom would be so proud of you right now,” he says, a catch in his voice. “I hope you know that.”

I swallow back the lump in my throat and look up at him. I can’t even remember the last time he’s brought her up out of the blue like this. “I know, Dad, but thanks for saying so.” He lets me go and I shoulder my messenger bag. “Time to face the music.”

We step out the back door to where my old electric blue Chevy Lumina is parked in the driveway, next to Dad’s only slightly less conspicuous cruiser. Dad watches as I slide in and turn the key. The engine chugs but doesn’t turn over.

I blow out a breath and pop the hood. By the time I grab the monkey wrench on the floor of the passenger side and get out of the car, Dad already has the hood propped up and is looking over the engine compartment.

“Don’t mess with Frank, Dad.” I point my finger in a circle at the guts of my poor Frankencar. Me and my best friend Chuck rebuilt most of the insides from junkyard parts when we took auto shop our senior year in high school. “It’s a delicate balance.”

He grins and steps back, his hands in the air. “Wouldn’t dream of it.”

I will always love Frank—he was my first—but I know I need a new car. Dad’s offered me Mom’s T-Bird, but I’m twenty-three. I’m supposed to be responsible for myself at this point. And besides, I’d rather he sold Mom’s car and put the money towards his retirement. Even though Port St. Mary is pretty sleepy most of the time, everyday he goes to work, I worry.

I reach between the radiator and the engine and give the alternator a sharp rap with the wrench, then slip back into the driver’s seat. When I turn the key, Frank chugs twice, same as always, then rumbles to life.

Dad ducks into the cruiser and gives me a little salute as I pull out.

Port St. Mary Elementary is only about two miles from home. It takes a grand total of eight minutes to drive there. Technically, it’s a one-room schoolhouse. The tiny twelve-space parking lot butts up against an octagonal building, which, in fact, is just one big room inside. In the exact center of the building are the bathrooms and storage closets, and from there, folding accordion partitions section off each wedge of the octagon. Each wedge is a grade level, kinder through sixth, and a multipurpose room. To the right of the parking lot is a doublewide “portable” that houses the school offices and small staff room. Behind that, children are already gathering in the playground, which is really just a weed-infested lot with a slide and jungle gym that has been there since before I started kindergarten here.

When I walk around the octagon to the door marked with a big yellow four and step inside, it’s like deja vu all over again. Mrs. Martin (she told me to call her Pam when we talked on the phone about the lesson plan yesterday, but I can’t bring myself to) has had the same posters on the walls since the dawn of time. The presidential chart ends with Reagan. She had already been teaching fourth grade in this same classroom for, like, twenty years when I had her.

I move to her desk, to the right of the door, and set my bag on it. And that’s when I see the note from Principal Richmond.

A new student.

I brush my palms down my slacks again, a fresh jolt of nerves twisting my insides into knots. I was already going to be way over my head with a classroom full of nine-year-olds fresh off Christmas vacation and all sugared up on candy canes.

I look over the instructions. Sherman William Davidson needs his reading comprehension assessment, writing and grammar evaluation, and his math skills worksheet completed by the end of the week.

I blow a wisp of hair off my forehead and unpack my toothpaste and toothbrush, my journal, and a few of my favorite colored pens into Mrs. Martin’s desk, careful not to displace her things too much. I’m just pulling the assessments for the new kid from the file cabinet when the classroom door opens. I hear Principal Richmond’s gravel voice before I turn around. “…and his classroom is here. We just got word a few days ago that our regular fourth grade teacher is out on medical leave, but Sherman will be in good hands with Ms. Wilson. She’s a very capable substitute.”

I take a deep breath as I turn and hope he’s not lying.

I substituted five times during fall semester. For the most part, everything went great until I subbed for Mrs. Yetz’s eighth grade class the week before winter break. Somehow, what started out as a math lab on probability devolved into a liar’s dice tournament, complete with money changing hands. I wasn’t sure they’d call me back after that.

But when I see Principal Richmond waddle his round frame through the door, I straighten the scarf I tied over my favorite teal sweater and try to look as confident in what he said as he does.

“Ms. Wilson,” he says, waving me over. “This is your new student, Sherman.”

Sherman is a wiry little thing with unruly brown hair and clothes that hang off him a little. He looks as if he’d vanish into himself if given the chance.

“He goes by Sherm,” the man standing next to him says.

I look up into some of the most amazing eyes I’ve ever seen. Heavy dark brows curve over irises the color of honey with burgundy flecks through them. Thick brown waves are loose around a strong face with angled cheekbones, and a square jaw covered in two-day stubble. Set in flawless olive skin are lips so firm and red they make me forget the frown that’s turning them down slightly at the corners. He’s just so…gorgeous, like something out of a magazine or a movie. And he’s tall—well over six feet of broad shoulders tapering to narrow hips under his blue button-down shirt. The tails are loose over pressed jeans that fit him just so. Everything about him is tailored and cultured and nothing like any of the year-rounders who live on this bumpkin island. But it’s not just the way he looks. A blend of confidence and something else I can’t identify but makes him feel a little intimidating wafts off him with the spicy cologne I keep catching hints of. He’s nothing like anyone I’ve ever met, even at Clemson.

I feel my jaw dangling and snap it closed, pulling myself together long enough to extend an arm. “I’m Adri.”

Principal Richmond clears his throat, and when I flick a glance his direction, I know my ogling didn’t go unnoticed. His brow is deeply furrowed and his frown curves so low it makes him look like one of those marionettes, where their chin is a whole different piece of wood than the rest of their face.

My eyes bulge and I shift my outstretched hand to Sherm. “I mean, Miss Wilson. Welcome to Port St. Mary, Sherm.”

The boy just looks at me with sad eyes the color of his…father’s?

My gaze gravitates back to the guy towering over me. Could he be Sherm’s dad? He looks way too young to have a nine-year-old. He also looks all business. There’s nothing soft or nurturing in his cold, sharp gaze as it flicks around the classroom, silently assessing.

“What’s on the other side of those partitions?” he asks Principal Richmond.

“The third and fifth grade classrooms,” he answers.

The guy’s eyes continue to scan the room. “He’ll spend all day in here?”

The principal nods. “Except when he’s on the playground.”

“Is there security on campus?”

Principal Richmond looks momentarily perplexed, rubbing his round stomach as if he’s thinking with it. “Not as such. We have yard monitors during recess and lunch, and the teachers are responsible for the children when they’re here in class.”

“What about lunch?”

“He can bring his own lunch, or buy a bag lunch from Nutritional Services for three dollars. Either way, if it’s nice weather, the children eat outside at the picnic tables. On rainy days, we open the partitions and they eat inside as a group.”

The guy reaches into his pocket, but Principal Richmond holds up his hand to stop him when he comes out with a thick wad of cash. “We don’t allow students to carry money on campus. When we’re done here, I’ll take you to the office and have you purchase a scan card for Nutritional Services.”

The guy nods, then moves to the door and jiggles the knob. “The exterior doors are left unlocked?”

“During school hours, yes.” Principal Richmond answers, moving to my desk and shuffling through the papers I pulled for Sherm.

The guy’s full lips narrow into a tight line and he scowls at the door. He spins and starts toward the door in the back of the room, leaving no stone unturned.

I wipe my hands down my slacks again and decide just to ask. “So, you’re Sherm’s father?”

His feet stall on the chipped linoleum and he seems to finally notice I exist. “Brother,” he answers, and that one word seems to carry the weight of the world with it as it falls from his mouth.

His eyes make a slow sweep of my face, and as they trail down my neck, the front of my sweater, over my hips and down my legs, I’m frozen in place, paralyzed by the intensity of his gaze.

Principal Richmond shoves some papers in my face, breaking the spell. “You still have fifteen minutes until the bell. Maybe you can get Sherman started on these.”

“Um…” I grab the papers out of his hand as Big Brother blinks, some of the thickest lashes I’ve ever seen hiding those incredible eyes. “Yeah. We’ll do that…”

Principal Richmond guides Big Brother to the door. “Let’s get out of their way and let them get started. I’m sure Sherman will have a positive experience here. Children his age tend to adjust quickly,” he’s saying as the door swings closed behind them.

June 5, 2008 I made a mistake of epic proportions. Moving home was an easy choice because I knew that I had to make things right. I had hoped to win back Harley’s friendship, but I never imagined that I’d win her heart … or the heart of her son. Now that I have, I’m never letting them go. They’re my life, the reason I breathe. We’ve worked hard to get where we are, and we’re finally standing on solid ground.
Or so I thought …

*******

Tyson’s ex-fiancé wasn’t supposed to move back to St. Louis … that wasn’t part of the plan. And she sure as hell wasn’t supposed to start working with him. I trust him—at least I think I do—but when secrets are being kept and things start to unravel, I’m left wondering if I made a mistake. I allowed myself to fall in love with the only man to ever break my heart.
And now I’m afraid he might break it again …

This is a Harley and Tyson Touch of Fate Novella and can be read after book #1 or book #2 but should not be read as a standalone.

tina thoughts a review for youK.L. Grayson knows how to write beautiful stories of romance, second chances, and emotion. Her latest novella, On Solid Ground, is a continuation of her debut story, Where We Belong, the story of second chances and fate for Harley and Tyson. After reading that debut novel, K.L. has a fan for life. Her words evoke powerful emotions and her stories touch your heart. In this novella, we get a glimpse into the happily ever after of Harley and Tyson. We see where they are now and how they are moving forward, building a solid foundation after the heartache of the past. This story is like a New Year’s Gift for fans of this series. This novella has everything you come to expect from Grayson’s writing. It is emotional, provocative, and sexy. There are moments of profound feeling and sweet moments you cannot help but fall in love with. I loved how this novella gives it all, allowing the reader to fully immerse back into their story and watch them struggle to take the next step. There are ups and downs but the reality that they cannot deny is that together is where they belong. Watching them embrace that future is beautiful and heartfelt. I am excited to read more from the Touch of Fate series and hope to see glimpses of Harley and Tyson in the future! You need to have read the first book in the series in order to grasp the beauty of this story! Do not miss this novella.

He found me in blood and tears.

I stayed with him through darkness and fire.

We loved each other in the moment between innocence and bitter truth.

We were the kids easily ignored, who grew into adults we hardly knew.

We weren’t meant to last forever. And we didn’t.

He ran away.

I tried to move on.

Yet I never stopped thinking about the boy who had fought to keep me alive in a world that would have swallowed me whole. He was the past that I buried, but never forgot.

Until the day I found him again, years after believing I had lost him forever.

And in cold, resentful eyes, I saw the heart of the man who had been everything when I had nothing at all. So I vowed to hold onto the second chance that was stolen from the children we had been.

With Every Breath in 5 words

With Every Breath, the Story Behind the Story: A little more information from the brilliant mind that created this book…

  1. I travelled to Patagonia with my then-boyfriend (now husband) and actually camped in Valle des Frances (where Rhys encounters Auden during a wild storm).
  2. The rockslide in the book actually happened to me while hiking in Patagonia. One of the scariest moments of my entire life.
  3. I’m an English major and one of my favorite poets was W.H Auden and one of my favorite all time poems is his “Musee des Beaux Arts.” Naming my heroine Auden and having Auden also be one of Rhys’s favorite poets was a sneaky bit of homage.
  4. While the male cover model for With Every Breath is incredibly gorgeous, Rhys has a beard J. Auden’s model looks almost identical to what I pictured in my head.
  5. I gave Auden a phobia of drinking fountains. . .I have the same one.
  6. I had planned to make Rhys as Canadian (from British Columbia) but he got quite grumpy (as is his way) because it turns out he is a very proud Scot. Worked for me!
  7. There is a difficult plot twist near the end that my agent begged me to reconsider because it gutted her too much. I felt like it was important (vital actually) to the story so dug my heels and regret nothing. Hint: it is NOT cheating or anything like that J
  8. I wasn’t sure about writing an epilogue but am so glad I did. The final banter is some of my favorite in the whole book.
  9. I have always wanted to use the term “beef bayonet” in a story. Guess I can cross that off the bucket list.
  10. Alternate titles for With Every Breath included: Above All Things, Aether, Highpoint, No Way Down, Follow Me, Love in Thin Air, Uncharted, and Freefall.

excerpt alert“Max, I realize now I have to live my life with passion and go after exactly what I want.”

“What do you want, Ava?” His eyes search my expression for what’s still unspoken.

I look at him and smile before I hurl myself off the cliff. The anticipation of the freefall is delicious, because I’m sure of where I’m going to land. I pause to study him for our final moment as two separate people.

Standing before me is my sparking live wire…his mind a verdant forest to endlessly wander. His uncontainable spirit swirls around me, lifting me off the ground. My cheeks are windburned and my heart wildly racing from the sheer force of it.

My gaze travels along his jaw, across his shoulders and down his thighs.I’m desperately hungry, because his body and his beautiful face are the physical manifestation of everything I’ve ever desired.

My friend, my greatest love…my Max.

He looks at me expectantly.

“You,” I whisper. “I want you.”

“Oh, Ava.” His voice is heavy with emotion as he steps forward and pulls me into his powerful arms. All of the longing we’ve suffered through now defines the surge of passion between us. His hands press into me as if in prayer.

My next breath catches with a sob, and tears of joy and relief paint my face. But he gently brushes them away and kisses the salty remains.

A shade of disbelief and confusion lingers. “You want me?” he whispers, as if he’s hoping so much to believe me. His lips graze my cheek, pausing so close to mine. I imagine he wants to breathe in my response, draw it inside and let it course through him like the blood that keeps his heart beating.

I grab his arms and shake him, my voice heated and urgent. I’m desperate to have him understand. “You have to know…I may have fought it, but you’re all I’ve ever wanted. I don’t want to deny it for another day, another moment.”

This time he sways, rocks forward, and lifts me intohis embrace. Our kiss is desperate as our hearts join together. I’m drunk with his taste, my tongue sliding across his, my teeth grazing his bottom lip before I sink further into him. His passion intoxicates me until I float out of my body to watch the scene before me.

We’re in a Maxfield Parrish amber-dipped landscape redefining the cinematic kiss. I imagine we’re near the edge of a cliff with the world laid out before us. The sun’s about to sink behind the horizon while we hold onto each other, bracing against the wind of all our past experiences as they whip past us. It’s a masterpiece. This moment should be in an elaborately gilded frame hanging in the Louvre.

I never thought I would ever write a book. I wasn’t even really a reader until age twenty. But I picked up a romance novel and that was it for me. I fell in love. And then one day I stepped into this indie world of books and I started writing. Then I wrote enough to keep going. And then I had a book. Sometimes things happen when you least expect it, but it all falls into place. Writing is it for me.
I’m a stay at home mom with a degree in chemistry and biology. I LOVE science. If you get me started talking about biochemistry, it’s all over. I’ll rattle on for days! But I use all that knowledge to take care of my two little girls. Mostly while my husband is away being a soldier.
It’s taken me a long time to get here, but I like it … And I think I might stay a while.
