When she secures the perfect internship during her study abroad semester, with an infamous celebrity public relations firm, she is determined to forge her own path – one that is nothing like her life back in Oklahoma. Killian is one bloody good football player. After a tragedy shattered his entire world, the cocky and arrogant face he puts on for the media is a complete lie. Red Card is a story of bad boy British soccer player meets country girl from small town America. I loved the idea and concept. I am from Norman, Oklahoma, the same as Leah, our young heroine, so having a common thread with a main character like that always makes the reader more involved with what is happening. I LOVE soccer, the beautiful game, and having all these factors work together in one book was something I could not wait to read. The book is well written and solid, even if some things fell a little flat for me personally. This is my first book from Carrie Aarons and her storytelling is great. She introduces characters that are true to their personality and creates a story that is fun to read. I would have loved for Leah to be a bit of a stronger female character, but I understand the transformation she needs to go through in this book. She was a woman who patterned her life to fit into a certain mold and when that mold no longer fit, she needed to break free and redefine who she is at the deepest level. I admired the way she grew into a more confident woman on the end, someone who learned to embrace the hardships of the world and grow stronger as a result.

I am a sucker for a good soccer bad boy. I love the game so much and the athleticism that comes with it. I love the energy and the culture that this game creates, especially in Europe. So when we see all of this come alive in London, watching the reluctant love story of Killian and Lucy unfold, it adds something more to what I read. The relationship between these two is full of lust and passion. Note that this book seems almost too steamy for New Adult, at least how I define it. When they break through that physical barrier that simmers between them, these two cannot seem to keep their hands off each other. The central theme of the media and misconceptions that come with celebrity is both frustrating and eye opening. You know that you cannot always trust what the media portrays but seeing that actuality behind some stories in this book was a harsh reality for these main characters to reckon with. It added yet another level of drama and angst that played with their relationship and emotions.

Red Card is a story of lust and passion that has the potential to bring about pain or purpose. Two unlikely characters find each other and learn to hold onto what is most important in life. It is a story of romance, passion, and heartache. There are ups and downs, but in the end, learning to let go brings about hope and love.  Red Card teaser

Trying to dash off to find the British Prince of Moodiness proves difficult in the six-inch stilettos the stylist had strapped onto my feet. I didn’t wear clothing like this. I was the Oklahoma girlnextdoor, cute and pretty in my sundresses and boots. I didn’t do skintight, short or heeled. I could hear the snickers of the PR handlers around me as I stumbled like a baby calf off of the carpet in search of my responsibility.Turning down the block and moving away from the mayhem, I spotted a tall figure in the shadows. I’d read enough about Jack the Ripper before coming over here to be spooked, but then I saw the shine of a metal flask being raised to the lips, and I could only take one guess as to who that was.

I marched up, as best as I could in the shoes. “You need to come back and walk the red carpet.”

Killian’s skyblue eyes twinkled with sly amusement and barely restrained anger. “Oh, and you’re going to make me, huh America’s Sweetheart?”

The smell of what I’m sure was overlyexpensive whiskey blew across my face as he exhaled. He pretended to give an air of nonchalance, but I could read his body language better than he thought I could. He was so coiled and tense, he gave a cobra ready to strike a run for its money. Rage and sorrow poured off of him in waves, blanketing the dark side street in misery so abundant that I could feel it down to my bones. And something else. I don’t know why it struck me, perhaps because the emotion was running through my veins as well. But this man…he was lonely.

“You’re cheeky, I like that.” He raised the flask in a salute to me and tilted his head back as the amber liquid disappeared into that appealing mouth. Damn it. This bad boy with a bad attitude was not going to ruin my career or my time here. I was done letting people decide the future for me, sweeping me along in the current just because I let them.

I knocked the flask straight out of his hand, sending little droplets of whiskey landing on both of us.

“Listen you jackass! I don’t know who you are. In fact, I don’t care if you’re the Prime Minister of this country! This job, I really need it. I’m taking this shot and succeeding at it if it means I have to put my blood, sweat and tears into it. And some London bad boy parading his pissed off attitude around for the world to see is not going to stop me! So button your jacket, plaster a smile on, and get on that carpet!”

My breathing was ragged, all of the energy I’d saved up to get through the event suddenly spent. Jetlag, homesickness and heartbreak were taking over, and I could feel the pull of all three from the inside out.

The leer on Killian’s face only proved that my tirade was all for nothing.

And then he moved. It was a blur of motion and speed before my back was against a brick wall. He’d pinned me, like a wolf circling in on their prey. Nervous tremors washed over my flesh, and I could hear the roaring in my ears. I was half afraid he would actually rip my throat out for speaking to him that way. The other half of me was too incredibly aroused to care.

“I am bad. But I’m not a boy, I’m a man. Have you ever been with a man, little lamb?” He chuckled darkly, leaning his entire form into me and pinning my hips with his hands. “No, I don’t think you have.”

#WhoIsBoBriggs
That’s all I saw all over social media a few years after he dumped me for a super model and was the first round draft pick for the North Carolina Hogs.
I thought I loved Bo, way back when, but it was all too cliché. He was the star quarterback and I was the head cheerleader. High school sweethearts turned college romance that crumbled when our careers twisted into different paths, or so we thought.
Oh and did I mention, I am about to start photographing his team?!
FML…This is going to be interesting to say the least.

tina thoughts a review for you

When they say this story is a short story, they are not kidding. It has every element you expect to find in a book played out in fast forward and then suddenly it is done. Despite the fact it felt a bit rushed, Kristen took everything you expect in a New Adult story and fused it together in a whirlwind, keeping you engaged and curious. Rough & Tumble is a second chance romance for Bo and Peyton. Life’s circumstances and misunderstandings tore them apart and when a second chance comes along, Bo will do whatever it takes to get her back. Their chance meeting sparks something new for these two but allows them to pick up where they left off in the past, diving right into the relationship and passion they always had before. I bet this story would be really great expanded into a full length novel, allowing the story to grow and connect. Yet as it is written now, you have a feeling of “wham, bam, thank you ma’am” that is a very short story. It is quick, precise, and all encompassing. Despite the rushed parts, it is a well written story that touches on many themes and emotions, which gives the reader a little bit of something to hold onto. If you are looking for a quick read, check this story out!

excerpt alert
I was startled awake. I had been falling fast in my dream and right before I hit the bottom, my eyes flew open. I quickly started to look around the foreign room. I couldn’t remember anything past seeing Brit and Roxy’s empty seats next to me at the club the night before.
I was in someone’s bed in a room I had never been in in my life. I was dressed in a large black shirt and my underwear and that was it.
How’d I get that fucked up last night?
I rolled out of bed. Hoping to figure out where the heck I was, I peered out the window. I knew that I was downtown somewhere, but for the life of me I couldn’t place the streets and landmarks in my view.
I spun on my heels as I heard the door to the strange room open. My heart was pounding and I was holding my breath as I waited to see who was coming in.
What the hell?
Of course, Bo Briggs slowly started to make his way over to me. I was paralyzed. He was engaged. What in god’s name was I doing in his room?
“How are you feeling?” He handed me a bottle of water and a couple Advil. His light blond hair was shorter than it had been, and he looked downright military with his defined muscles, sleeves of tattoos, and crooked grin that always brought me to my knees.
“Fine.” I took the tiny pills and water from my hunky ex and chugged them down fast. In all reality, my head felt like it had been run over by a Mack truck. “What happened last night? Did we…?” I sunk onto the bed. Except for a few times in passing, it was the first time I had seen Bo in a few years. All the old buried feelings flooded me. I had known for a long time that I wasn’t over my ex, but I didn’t want him to ever know that.
“You were drugged last night at the club.”
My face felt hot, my palms turned clammy, and my head felt like it was about to explode. “What the fuck?” My voice crackled.

tina thoughts a review for youThere is nothing like a sweet novella to add to your READ shelf. Guarding Sophie was a quick story that is full of heart and a second chance. I love sports romances and this book has a hint of the football limelight and one of my favorite themes, a second chance to make it right. Julie Brannagh does a great job of giving us a story that is heartfelt and feels like there is more depth than you would anticipate. With a novella, there is always a chance that it will have gaping holes and be a small taste and not satisfying. With Guarding Sophie, the history that these two characters have and the situations that they encounter allow for the story to be bigger than it’s novella status. There is history between Sophie and Kyle, which allows them to jump into the romance without feeling too rushed (despite the inevitable insta-love theme). Sophie’s situation is something that is unfortunately very common in life, so that theme does not require tons of development. The reader is able to build an entire backstory from the glimpses given. It is what it is and after a bit of history, you have the depth you need. I have not read anything from the Love and Football series before. This novella gives you a taste of the series without bombarding you with too many people and plotlines. You meet Kyle’s teamates in this story, and the rest of the series is obviously about their HEAs, yet you never really feel lacking. It feels like you are thrown into a reunion of friends where you only know one person but they draw you in and make you feel welcome. This story is sweet, romantic, with a bit of danger and intriguing thrown in. This series from Julie Brannagh has been added to the TBR list and I am excited to see more of the stories we have glimpses of in this novella.

excerpt alertKyle Carlson wore sunglasses, but they were no match for the brilliance of Noel, Washington’s late-spring sunshine. Noel was a mountain pass and a ninety-minute drive away from his life in Seattle. The small town was the perfect place to get lost for a while.

He shielded his eyes with one hand as the real estate agent and interior decorator he’d hired drifted into view. The real estate agent held out a shiny new set of house keys to him.

“It’s all yours, Kyle. Congratulations.”

“Thanks,” he said. “Everything’s ready to go?”

“Of course,” the decorator said. “You wanted simple but comfortable and earth tones. I hope you’ll love it. If you have questions or need anything else, please give me a call right away.” She dug into what Kyle knew was an expensive designer handbag and extended her brightly-patterned business card to him. “Thank you for the business and enjoy.”

“Take a look inside,” the real estate agent said. “I think you’ll love it.”

“I’ll do that,” Kyle said. “Thanks again.”

The real estate agent and interior designer shook hands with him and got into their car. He raised a hand in farewell as they followed the winding, narrow road back to downtown Noel, I-90 and civilization as quickly as possible.

Kyle longed for privacy like other people wanted drugs or alcohol. He hadn’t always been so anti-social. The past seven years of dealing with scores of family members, “friends” and others who thought he was their personal ATM machine since he was drafted into the NFL had finally taken its toll. He realized that his profession didn’t really lend itself to anonymity. Maybe he should have become a plumber or an auto mechanic instead of the starting wide receiver for the world champion Seattle Sharks. If he’d had a more unobtrusive life, he’d go to work from seven to four or so, go home, put his feet up, have a beer and quit worrying about the problems that came when one was lucky enough to earn a staggering income for catching a football six months a year.

Kyle walked up the front path and climbed two stairs to the A-line’s wraparound front porch. The front door of his new cabin was hardwood inlaid with baguettes of beveled, leaded glass. Two stories featured floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over a view of blue skies, puffy white clouds, and endless evergreens. Instead of the rustic, unfinished structure most people would imagine when hearing the word “cabin”, his new place was as luxurious as the stylish Seattle hotel he’d just checked out of. It was also the perfect place to hide out for a couple of months.

He stepped over the threshold of the cabin he’d spent a shocking amount of money on and took a deep breath. Sun-warmed, lemon-scented air surrounded him. The front door shut behind him as he glanced around.

The floors were hardwood. The furnishings were earth tones, man-sized, with a few brightly colored accents to draw the eye.  A gas fireplace with a stone surround dominated most of one wall in the living room. A long staircase led to a loft that overlooked the first story and three bedrooms. He’d thought long and hard about the extra two bedrooms before buying the place. If he had nowhere for anyone else to sleep, they’d be a lot less likely to visit, which worked for him.

He let out a contented sigh as he realized the only sound was his breathing. He’d bought the house in the name of a trust his family and friends knew nothing about. He’d moved out of his huge house in Newcastle two days ago and used the proceeds from its sale to fund the house he was currently standing in and a one-bedroom condo in a Bellevue high rise, also in the name of the trust.  It was his choice who found out where he was and what he was doing from now on.

He’d have almost two months of solitude before training camp started. He couldn’t wait.

tina's thoughts doodlesackI fell in love with hockey because of a book and then when I saw it live it became something I couldn’t get enough of. So when I find a good hockey book I hold tight and never let go. After finishing RYKER, I thought to myself, how did I not know about this series and the amazingness that is the Cold Fury Hockey team. Somehow I missed it all completely but it is ok because now I have 3 books to download and catch up on. RYKER was the best sports romance that I have read in quite some time. It takes a fabulous sport, a passionate love story, and a cast full of great characters to the next level giving us something to gush about in the end!

One of my favorite things about this book was Ryker himself. He is not your standard athlete in a romance book. He is an alpha man but not in the traditional sense. It is a subtle presence that naturally draws you to him. He is not overbearing but instead kind and flirty. He isn’t cocky but a team player, someone who wants what is best for the whole no matter the outcome for himself. His love for his daughters has the power to make you warm and fuzzy on the inside. His gentleness is such a standard of strength that enhances his grace and protector stance. He is powerful and all man, which is displayed many times between those covers, but there is a sweetness to his character that made him more than the dominating figure of so many romance novels these days.

Gray is the perfect puzzle piece to Ryker. She is gorgeous, intelligent, and strong. She brings healthy dose of feminine power to the table. I loved her take charge attitude and the way she perceives every obstacle she comes into contact with. Gray is such a dominating character and when her edges begin to soften as she falls for Ryker, she becomes an incredible female role model. She is bright and fierce when she needs to be but she learns to embrace love and life in a new way with Ryker.

The team aspect of this book is great! I loved watching the interactions and the support they had for one another. Cold Fury was a team with a mission and they learned to come together despite their reservations and support one another. Seeing a glimpse into the locker room and the conversations of the team mates allows the reader to see a side of hockey that is fascinating. The team aspect of any sport is like a family and watching them work through problems is enlightening.  When you add the adrenaline and the excitement that accompanies hockey, you have a great theme within the story.

Gray and Ryker’s romance is full of passion and respect. I loved how they saw each other and the steps they would take to be with one another. Their situation was not easy and they were so determined to have it all- a fact that could have been selfish but instead it was exactly as it should be. These two deserved love, the big, exciting, butterflies in your stomach, romantic kind. They deserved each other as equals in both friendship and romance. Watching this unfold was lovely and I appreciated their commitment and determination to fight for what they wanted.

You love sports, romance, hockey, or just a plain good story? Then make sure to one click RYKER! It will leave you satisfied and yet begging for so much more! I am excited to read the previous titles in the series and I am looking forward to what Sawyer has in store for the future of the Cold Fury hockey team!

excerpt alertMy phone gives a short chime and I pull it out of my pocket. I can’t help the curl of slight disgust that comes to my lips when I see an email from Hensley. Most people would agree: A man is allowed to be disgusted by his wife when she sleeps with another man. Even more so when that other man is a teammate.

But that’s not why I curl my lips and wrinkle my nose. No, I’m pretty much past that, and I know I’m past it because I just don’t think about it anymore. In fact, I’m expecting the final divorce decree in the mail any day now. Our hearing was last month in Boston and my lawyer assured me it would sail through with no hitches, mainly because Hensley and I were able to agree on a division of our assets and custody of the girls coming to me.

No . . . there is absolutely not a single remaining bitter feeling left in me about the loss of my wife and her betrayal to our marriage. It’s over and I’m ready to move on.

I am, however, completely affronted by Hensley’s attitude toward her daughters. Those precious silver-eyed beauties whom she dumped on my doorstep before she checked out of their lives so she could run around the country with her boy toy during hockey season.

A quick glance at her email and my stomach knots up. A simple reminder that she’ll be in town next week when the Boston Eagles—my former team—will be here in Raleigh to play the Cold Fury. Because Hensley is still currently fucking my former Eagle teammate Patric Sutter, and living with him on the road, she’ll be here for a visit. Obviously, she wants to spend some time with Violet and Ruby.

I hit Reply, but before my fingers can even begin to type what I hope will be a fairly calm response—because let’s face it, I’m not going to keep her away from the girls—my phone starts ringing, immediately followed by a picture of Zack popping up.

Zack Grantham.

My teammate. My best friend.

Boyfriend to Kate Francis, my girls’ part-time nanny and the angel who helped me get grounded when I needed it most.

“What’s up?” I say, leaning back against the hallway wall. I keep an eye on the space below the bathroom door, making sure the spider doesn’t come prowling out. I have my foot poised to strike out and stomp the little fucker if it shows.

“Dude . . . turn on the TV right now to channel thirty-three,” he says in a rush.

I don’t think to question the urgency in Zack’s voice and quickly step into Violet and Ruby’s room to grab the remote. I deftly change the channel to the sports news network as I sit on the end of Violet’s little twin bed decorated in purple flowers and white lace.

“. . . while this is still very much speculation, it appears the wheels are in motion for the league to see its first female general manager in its ninety-eight-year existence. Sources inside the Cold Fury office will do nothing more than confirm that while Brian Brannon has stepped down from his position as the team’s general manager, he will still retain his position as president and CEO of the organization. A more formal statement is expected later today.”

The male reporter turns to his co-anchor at the desk, a beautiful blonde who looks more like a beauty queen than a sports reporter and says, “So, Jessica . . . potentially historic news coming out of Raleigh, North Carolina, today.”

The blonde nods seriously and turns to face the camera. “Very historic and also controversial. If these rumors are true, Grayson Brannon, daughter and heir to the Brannon fortune, will become the first female general manager of a professional hockey team. I’m sure this is going to spark a lot of heated debate over her capabilities, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.”

The male reporter nods sagely and looks down at a digital tablet sitting before him on the desk. “Already, Twitter is blowing up with comments about the potential change in management.”

A news graphic appears to the left of the reporter on the TV screen, showing some of the tweets as he reads them out loud. “Here’s one from @FuryFan4Life . . . What the hell is @Carolina_Cold_Fury thinking? A woman general manager? Ridiculous.

The blond reporter props her chin in the palm of her hand, watching her co-anchor as he reads the tweets, her face the perfect mask of concerned interest.

Gray Brannon is more than qualified. Give her a chance,” he reads aloud. “That’s from @carolina_girl_87.”

“There’s going to be a lot of polarized opinions about this,” the blonde says, and the camera zooms in on her. “But everyone needs to remember, Gray Brannon may be young, but she has the experience needed—”

I hit the mute button on the TV, not needing to hear all about Gray Brannon. I know plenty already.

“Think it’s true?” I ask Zack as I put him on speakerphone.

“No idea. I was just watching TV and this breaking news came on.”

Almost as if by eerie design, my phone chimes and a text appears. It’s from the Cold Fury office and simply says, Team Meeting 5PM.

“Did you just get that text?” Zack asks.

“Yup, and I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s true.”

Zack gives a low whistle. “Ballsy move for Brannon.”

That it is.

Moving his daughter into the position of the team’s general manager. Fucking ballsy as hell and I’m guessing it’s going to cause some dissension in the ranks.

Not from me, though. I personally think Gray Brannon can do the job. She is, after all, the one personally responsible for getting me traded to the Cold Fury, and for that alone she has my support.

Now Alex has a choice: fix his public image through community service or ride the bench. But Alex refuses to be molded into the Carolina Cold Fury poster boy . . . not even by a tempting redhead with killer curves.

As a social worker, Sutton Price is accustomed to difficult people–like Alex, who’s been assigned to help her create a drug-abuse awareness program for at-risk youth as part of the team’s effort to clean up his image. What she doesn’t expect is the arrogant smirk from his perfect lips to stir her most heated fantasies. But Sutton isn’t one to cross professional boundaries–and besides, Alex doesn’t do relationships . . . or does he? Inside Game
Collette West
Genre: Adult, Contemporary Romance
Publication Date: July 10, 2015

Third baseman Drake Schultz is the undisputed bad boy of the New York Kings. So it’s no surprise when Major League Baseball suspends him for taking performance-enhancing drugs. Furious with their superstar, the front office issues an ultimatum: either work with their sober companion or kiss the rest of his quarter-billion-dollar contract goodbye. Cocky and arrogant, Drake resists being saddled with a live-in babysitter—even one he’s insanely attracted to.

Drake is Eva Sloane’s first celebrity client as a substance abuse counselor, and she knows she’s in trouble when he starts tempting her at every turn. The way he looks at her is as hot as sin, but she refuses to become his new drug of choice. Slowly, she helps him realize he has to face the demons from his past and heal his tortured spirit before he can even think about satisfying any craving he has for her.

Untitled design (3)tina's thoughtsInside Game by Collette West takes a look at a completely different side of baseball that many try to hide. When I realized this book was about Drake Schultz, I was so excited. He is the hated player on the team, the ultimate bad boy of bas ball, and I had a feeling the animosity wasn’t always there. I wondered what triggered his role and what his story was. Well, that man’s story is full of heartache and bad decisions, ones that was beginning to destroy his life and career. This book takes a look at the hidden scandals, the choices a man makes, and the woman who fights for him.

Drake Schultz… This man is the one that everyone loves to hate and the only people who liked him at all were the people who wanted something from him. His role to many professional athletes as supplier of sports enhancement drugs is the definition of who he is but it takes someone special to show that he is more than baseball and drugs. Eva is his superior in so many ways. She gives as well as she takes. She is compassionate, considerate, and determined to bring Drake back to where he once was and show him a life of sobriety is one that is worth being clean for. When you put these two together it is high stress, high emotion, and full of ups and downs.

This book touches on some sensitive subjects that I haven’t seen much of in sports romance books. So often in life we hear scandals of organizations attempting to cover up drug use and then outing people involved and drama ensues. Inside Game takes a look at the other side: the one where the athlete must make a decision to be sober or leave the game. Collette West does a great job of showing that situation. Drake is addicted and  has to make daily choices to fight his addiction in order to come back to what he loves most of all: baseball. When more about his haunted past comes to light, the reader begins to piece together his past hurt and his coping mechanisms that lead him to this low place in the present. This book could be so heavy and depressing when truth comes out about all parties involved, but instead Collette weaves this story with hope. Eva embodies that quality. She is hopeful when it seems like that is the last thing you could possible see in a situation.

The relationship between these two is wonderful. There is an undeniable chemistry between them but there is so much more. Eva is first and foremost his sober companion. Her goal is to bring him to a place of acceptance and change. Drake doesn’t make it easy but finds himself wanting to be good for her. His fear of disappointment is a huge factor in his steps to a new life but in the end it is the decision for him to want a new life for himself, a life he never thought possible filled with love of a woman and his children and love of the game, that is the deciding factor. It is a love story but above all it is the story of a man finding who he is and taking the steps to embrace it. I appreciated that the story was a bit different than I expected and such a story of triumph and bittersweet life.

about the author

Collette West grew up as somewhat of a jock-nerd hybrid. Entering the world three weeks premature, her dad nearly missed her birth because he had seats behind the dugout for a sold-out, highly-anticipated match-up between two of baseball’s biggest rivals. Not to be outdone, her book-loving mom taught her how to read by the time she was three. A love of the game coupled with an appreciation for the written word were instilled in Collette’s impressionable brain from a young age. No wonder her characters believe in the philosophy: sports + romance = a little slice of heaven.

Splitting her time between the Pocono Mountains and Manhattan, Collette indulges her inner fangirl by going to as many games as she can from hockey to baseball and downloading every sports romance novel in existence onto her iPad. When she’s not clicking away on her laptop, she enjoys walking her dog in Central Park, satisfying her caffeine craving at the Starbucks on Broadway and keeping an eye out for Mr. Right. But above all, she loves dishing with her readers. Email her at collette_west@yahoo.com.

She is the author of NIGHT GAMES, GAME CHANGER and GAME ON.

Bellevue Bullies #2
Genre: New Adult, Sports Romance, Contemporary Romance
Release Date: April 27, 2015
Things are heating up for the Sinclair boys! With one already in the NHL, Jayden Sinclair is hoping to be next! This has been the toughest year of my life. I watched my brother go into the draft without me, my mom got divorced, and the weight of my family’s issues is heavy on my shoulders. I feel like it’s my job to fix everything while working my butt off in school and trying to make my game better. I have to go into the draft. It will give my family the support they need, and it will prove that I’m good enough. But to get there, I have to show I can be the best captain for the Bellevue Bullies. The spot is mine—no one can take it. First though, Jude is making me go on a brother’s weekend. Innocent enough, I guess…until I see her. She’s the biggest competitor I’ve ever faced. Not only for my spot but also my heart. It’s hard to ignore someone like Baylor Moore.

I don’t lose. I can’t. My dad has bred me to be the best in anything I do. I am driven, I am smart, and I am going to be the first woman in the National Hockey League. No two ways about it. I’ve worked too hard. I’ve been through too much not to have what I want. I know I can do it. I will make my dad proud, and no one will stand in the way of that. That is, until I let him in. He scares me. He makes me feel. And he could very well be the one person who can make me want more than just to win.We both have the same goal. Victory. But how do you compete against the person you want to win? It’s not easy. Love isn’t something you can control. It isn’t like a puck that can be handled by a stick. No, it has a mind of its own and does what it wants.Neither of us saw it coming, and we really don’t know if there is a way to score, especially when you’re being Clipped by Love.

tina's thoughts

Ok. Now don’t think I am crazy but this is the first hockey themed book I have read by Toni Aleo. I know. This is something that is going to be quickly remedied because Clipped by Love was wonderful! This book has so many incredible themes, characters, and fast paced action. Jayden Sinclair and Baylor Moore leap off the page, two characters so full of life, passion, and emotion.

I love to read books with characters that evoke a strong emotional response. It can be good or bad but they catch your attention and draw you into their story. That is how I felt when I read this book! Jayden will cause the flirty girl in you to smile and maybe even giggle. His charm is charismatic in the extreme and he is determined to be who he is and fight for what he wants. He is an alpha male without the overbearing and harsh qualities. His confidence exudes from the words you read and you cannot help but fall a little in love with him. Baylor is one that I loved but frustrated the heck out of me. I loved her tenacity, spunk, and passion for the game.  She is a character that you sometimes want to be so angry with but you are so far inside of her head that you cannot help but begrudgingly understand her misconceptions and hesitations. That fact right there shows how talented Toni Aleo is. Someone with Baylor’s tendencies would normally grate on my nerves but instead you root for her, even if you want to shake some sense into her. These two characters are who they are unapologetically yet they grow into so much more by the end of the book. The transformation in Baylor is fantastic and I loved her courage!

The secondary characters are perfect! The theme of family is big in this story. There is the biological family and the team family dynamic. I love how the Bellevue Bullies accepted Baylor into the fold, despite her distance and cold shoulder. They protected each teammate as a blood relative and it was amazing to see them grow into a strong team as a result. As for biological, you see the good and the ugly. We see loving parents and parents with a selfish personal agenda. It was beautiful to watch the Sinclair family interact and support one another. I loved Baylor’s tight relationship with her father. Relationships, not just the romance, were such a foundational part to this story!

But we cannot talk about this book without the addressing romance! Jayden and Baylor… Their chemistry is electric. It is a constant push and pull. Their passion in life in general creates for a relationship that has the potential to be incredible or heart breaking. Watching these two fall in love was beautiful. There are some raw moments and some ugly cries. But there are so many sweet moments as we watch Jayden break down the walls around Baylor’s heart.

On a side note: I love that this book is part of a series but can be read completely as a standalone. As I mentioned before, I have never read a hockey themed book from Toni Aleo.  You can tell that many of the secondary characters you meet throughout this book are people you meet in Toni’s other books but you never feel confused of who this other person is or overburdened with too much of their back story. Instead I was intrigued and when I found out they had their own books, I immediately added them all to me TBR list! This book can be read as a standalone (trust me- I just did it) and there will be no missing back story or plot gaps, which is yet another testament to Toni’s writing skills!

When she lost it all, Jess decided to cope by living a lie. But you can’t keep on pretending forever…

Twenty-one-year-old Jess used to have everything—a loyal best friend, a boyfriend she loved, and a future that was right on track. But in a single night, her whole world changed.

Now, Jess lives for the impersonal connection of drunken hook-ups and to-go coffee cups in the morning. All she needs is one night to pretend everything is fine…until she meets Adam.

Thanks to a sports injury, gorgeous, charming basketball star Adam Carson is stuck in physical therapy at the hospital where Jess interns—giving her the perfect opportunity to see his sweet, considerate nature and making her realize that maybe she does want something more.

one night teaser

tina's thoughtsA.J. Pine has made a slam dunk with her incredible new release, One Night! I was hooked from page one, on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what happened in the past and what was coming in the present and future. One Night tells the story of two broken people who find one another and their struggle to put the pieces back together.

One of my favorite things about this story is that it is a New Adult love story but it is so much more. It is the story of one young woman’s struggle to deal with her past and find her footing in the present. Jess is broken and her pain radiates off the pages of this book. She is trying to leave the past behind and build a new future- something that can never work until she has faced her demons and begun to work through the trauma she faced. A.J. does an excellent job of allowing us to see her struggle and as a result, the reader cannot help but feel deeply with Jess. The reader doesn’t know the source of her pain until you see her many self-destructive patterns, which allows us to see a glimpse into her utter brokenness. Jess has such a beautiful shattered heart that is clouded by grief, bitterness, and anger. When she meets Adam, she begins to feel hope, a dangerous emotion that threatens to destroy everything she has built over the last year.

Adam is a breath of fresh air. He is a hero who is kind, sweet, and loving. He stands out as a fantastic male lead in a world of alpha dominant men. I loved that he was different from the trend and THAT is what sets him above the rest. Adam is a man who knows what he wants but is willing to wait to have it. He is gentle and loving, a man who wears his emotions on his sleeve. His personality is kind and strong, allowing him to know when to advance and when to retreat. He is the perfect counterpart to Jess. Together their broken pieces are a bit less jagged.

The secondary characters in this book create a beautiful story. Zoe and Regan are most definitely my favorites. I love Zoe, Jess’ roommate, with her no non-sense attitude. She breaks through Jess’ walls allowing for the people she loves to inch in day by day. Their friendship is deep despite the fact they are new friends. Regan is one of Jess’ patients and that girl speaks truth and wisdom beyond her years. She is a fighter and an inspirational character! Jess’ family, past friends, and one night stands are all littered throughout the story, adding the perfect amount of drama which enhances the storyline perfectly.

Adam and Jess are such beautifully written characters. This is a gorgeous love story but more importantly to me, it is a story of one woman’s journey to healing. She learns to love again and trust. It is a raw story that shows the good, the bad, and the ugly. A.J. has once again won me over with her incredible characters, storyline, and written emotions. This book is officially on the recommendation bookshelf!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR-2Without thinking, I reach a hand behind me and brush the side of his face where Jake took his cheap shot. My fingers skim the morning stubble on his jaw. His lungs constrict under me, and I know I shouldn’t have done it. But he leans in to my touch, and I’m the one concealing a gasp.

“How does it feel?” I ask, guilt dripping off my words.

“I’m fine,” he says, his voice a throaty whisper.

I justify my hand lingering on his face with the thought that I owe him. He’s already been hurt because of me, twice in one night, and still he stayed. The longing hangs between us. If he wants what little I’m able to give, I can honor that request. But it’s the warmth of his skin on mine, the need to fill all of the empty spaces with his touch. Why shouldn’t I deserve this too? Maybe a tiny pocket of happiness is better than none at all.

My hand slides to the corner of his mouth, my fingertips resting on his lips.

“Jess.”

His voice is a whisper now, one that makes my body scream. I will follow his lead. I will give him what he wants, what we both need. Maybe we can seal some of the cracks for each other. Maybe the next time we break, there will be fewer pieces to pick up.

It’s almost imperceptible, the brush of his lips against my fingers. We teeter on the edge, and if I ignore it, if I don’t acknowledge the kiss, I will pull us back from the brink. The boundaries will remain.

I pull my hand away and turn so I kneel beside him. His dark eyes gaze at me with more intensity than I’ve ever seen. We both want this. No, we need this.

My fingers find their way back to his mouth, skimming his bottom lip. Adam’s eyes close, and my name is a soft moan escaping with his breath.

“Jess.”

Every part of me pulses with the nearness of him, and my lips join my fingers in quiet, longing exploration of his mouth. There is no kiss yet, only lips searching lips before we each let go of the last of our restraint.

He opens his eyes and looks at me through dark lashes. His hand reaches for mine, pulling it gently from his mouth.

“Are you sure?”

He breathes the words into my mouth, and I don’t allow myself time for rational thought.

“Yes,” I breathe back. “Yes.”

Both of his hands cradle my face, his fingers tucking strands of hair behind my ears, thumbs brushing my lashes, the whole time my lips still resting light upon his.

The only thing I hear before we cross the barrier is my own shallow inhalation, and then tentative exploration gives way to the pressure of his mouth on mine.

His kiss is halfway between tender and hungry. I straighten on my knees and run my fingers through his hair. He releases a shaky breath, and my back arches, pushing my chest against his.

My right knee slides over his outstretched leg so I’m straddling him. And this is it, the line crossed. I expect the fear and the logic that has gripped me for so long to pull me back. But instead, as my lips crush against his, everything else melts away. I am suspended in this moment for as long as time will let me.

Adam’s teeth graze my bottom lip, and I gasp with pleasure. His tongue traces the same path, and I open my mouth, inviting him in. He tastes like cinnamon, and I smile against him realizing he’s used my mouthwash.

Our tongues tangle and untangle, sweeping across teeth and lips. I’ve had first kisses before, but not like this. Even with Bryan, the boy I knew I’d fall in love with, there was never this kind of heat, this undeniable need.

Bryan. Even when I’m awake, he’s here, reminding me how stupid I am to hope, to want more than I can give. The realization is a wake-up call, and I pull away from him, panting.

I knew I wanted him. I knew we both needed this moment. But I can’t need him. Not when I know he can’t stay.

That was never an option. And my selfish longing isn’t worth what all of this will end up doing to him.

Neither of us says a word.

Adam’s smile is broad and beautiful until his eyes lock on mine. It fades as recognition blooms. He can see it on my face, the reconstruction of my walls, and I wonder if our small moment was time enough to put any of the broken pieces back together, or if all we did was make a new crack.

KM football teaser

tina's thoughtsHoly hotness Batman! Lex Martin has done it again folks. KISSING MADELINE is the perfect third installment to the Dearest Series! It was emotional, poignant, hot, and sweet! I enjoyed every minute and could read for many more hours about Maddie and Daren and their beautiful story!

Daren and Maddie have a history and very different standards in their life at the moment but they both have one thing in common: no dating. Maddie has just been broken to pieces when she found her athlete boyfriend in bed with another woman. Daren is determined to focus on one thing: football. He cannot afford distractions while trying to adjust to NFL life. But the one thing that neither of them can ignore is their “set your pants on fire” chemistry, something neither can de-tangle themselves from. So a “friends with benefits” arrangement ensues and lines are blurred, leaving hearts on the edge of being destroyed.

Daren and Maddie are quite possibly my favorite couple of the series. (I feel like I will have to hold judgement until I read them all once more!) Their connection is deep and their friendship grows in such a beautiful and natural way. I adored Maddie! She is fiery and determined, fighting for what she wants and putting all she can muster into her career. She is a beautiful person on the inside and the outside. I loved her understanding of Daren and the way she fell so hard for him. It was beautiful to read. Daren is the epitome of sexy athlete meets the man you bring home to your mom. Sure he has made mistakes in the past and he is still muddling through life, finding his way, but this man is confident in his motives and determined to embrace what life throws at him. He is the perfect counterpart to Maddie, able to draw her out of her shell and allow her to embrace the world around her.

Now this book is HOT! The sizzling chemistry between Maddie and Daren is off the charts. They click in every possible way. Their friendship develops amidst the “benefits” stage and these two cannot seem to get enough of one another. I loved how they both craved each other, not just in bed, but in life. It is like they found the missing piece of their soul and that piece brought the world into a right perspective. On a side note… try not to let an old granny read this book over your shoulder on the bus or subway…. She might have a heart attack from all the sexiness Lex jammed into this book!

This story is quite dramatic, but the drama ebbs and flows in such a way that it is never frustrating or overwhelming. The plot progresses so well and when all the crap hits the fan, you are stunned at what has just happened. The secondary characters are some of the people that make this book so well rounded. The gang from the first two books in the Dearest series have many cameos and we see many new characters from Daren’s team and Maddie’s job. These people and relationships are what puts the proverbial icing on the cake. They enhance an already fantastic story and leave you ridiculously satisfied with what happened!

DEAREST CLEMENTINE (Dearest, #1 – Clementine & Gavin)

Amazon | Nook | Kobo | Paperback

Dearest ClementineTwenty-year-old Clementine Avery doesn’t mind being called bitchy and closed off. It’s safe, and after being burned by her high school sweetheart and stalked by a professor her freshman year of college, safe sounds pretty damn good.

Her number one rule for survival? No dating. That is until she accidentally signs up for a romance writing class and needs material for her latest assignment. Sexy RA Gavin Murphy is more than happy to play the part of book boyfriend to help Clem find some inspiration, even if that means making out…in the name of research, of course.

As Gavin and Clem grow closer, they get entangled in the mystery surrounding a missing Boston University student, and Clem unwittingly becomes a possible target. Gavin tries to show Clem she can handle falling in love again, but she knows she has to be careful because her heart’s at stake…and maybe even her life.

FINDING DANDELION (#2 – Jax and Dani)

Amazon | Nook | Kobo | Paperback

Finding Dandelion Official Cover

When soccer all-star Jax Avery collides with Dani Hart on his twenty-first birthday, their connection is instantaneous and explosive. For the first time in years, Jax isn’t interested in his usual hit-it and quit-it approach.

But Dani knows better. Allowing herself a night to be carefree and feel the intensity of their attraction won’t change anything when it comes to dealing with a player. So when Jax doesn’t recognize Dani the next time he sees her, it shouldn’t be a total shock. The fact that he’s her new roommate’s brother? That’s a shock.

Dani doesn’t regret that night with Jax, just the need to lie about it. Since her roommate has made it clear what she thinks about her brother’s “type” of girl, the last thing Dani wants is to admit what happened.

Jax knows he’s walking a fine line on the soccer team. One more misstep and he’s off the roster, his plans to go pro be damned. Except he can’t seem to care. About anything… except for the one girl who keeps invading his dreams.

Despite Jax’s fuzzy memory of his hot hookup with his sister’s friend, he can’t stay away from her, even if that means breaking his own rules. But there are bigger forces at work–realities that can end Dani’s college career and lies that can tear them apart. Jax realizes what he’s losing if Dani walks away, but will he sacrifice his future to be with her? And will she let him if he does?
