excerpt alertUnderground Ward, the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum, Oxford

The writing on the wall says it’s January 14. I am not sure what year. I haven’t been sure of many things lately, but I’m wondering if it’s my handwriting I’m looking at.

There is an exquisite-looking key drawn underneath the date. It’s carved with a sharp instrument, probably a broken mirror. I couldn’t have written this. I’m terrified of mirrors. They love to call it Catoptrophobia around here.

Unlike those of the regular patients in the asylum, my room is windowless, stripped down to a single mattress in the middle, a sink, and bucket for peeing—or puking—when necessary. The tiles on the floor are black and white squares, like a chessboard. I never step on black. Always white. Again, I’m not sure why.

The walls are smeared with a greasy, pale green everywhere. I wonder if it’s the previous patient’s brains spattered all over from shock therapy.
In the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum, politely known as the Warneford Hospital, the doctors have a fondness for shock therapy. They love watching patients with bulging eyes and shivering limbs begging for relief from the electricity. It makes me question who is really mad here.

It’s been a while since I was sent to shock therapy myself. Dr. Tom Truckle, my supervising physician, said I don’t need it anymore, particularly after I stopped mentioning Wonderland. He told me that I used to talk about it all the time; a dangerous place I claim I had been whisked away to, when my elder sister lost me when I was seven.

Truth is, I don’t remember this Wonderland they are talking about. I don’t even know why I am here. My oldest vivid memory is from a week ago. Before that, it’s all a purple haze.

I have only one friend in this asylum. It’s not a doctor or a nurse. And it’s not a human. It doesn’t hate, envy, or point a finger at you. My friend is an orange flower I keep in a pot—a Tiger Lily I can’t live without. I keep it safe next to a small crack in the wall, where a single ray of sun sneaks through for only ten minutes a day. It might not be enough light to grow a flower, but my Tiger Lily is a tough girl.

Each day I save half of the water they give me for my flower. As for me, better thirsty than mad. My orange flower is also my personal rain check for my sanity. If I talk to her and she doesn’t reply, I know I am not hallucinating. If she talks back to me, all kinds of nonsense starts to happen. Insanity prevails. There must be a reason why I am here. It doesn’t mean I will easily give in to such a fate.

“Alice Pleasance Wonder. Are you ready?” The nurse knocks with her electric prod on my steel door. Her name is Waltraud Wagner. She is German. Everything she says sounds like a threat, and she smells like smoke. My fellow mad people say she is a Nazi—that she used to kill her own patients back in Germany. “Get avay vrom za dor. I’m coming in,” she demands.

As I listen to the rattling of her large keychain, my heart pounds in my chest. The turn of the key makes me want to swallow. When the door opens, all I can think of is choking her before she begins to hurt me. Sadly, her neck is too thick for my nimble hands. I stare at her almost-square figure for a moment. Everything about her is four sizes too big. All except her feet, which are as small as mine. My sympathies, little feet.

“Time for your daily ten-minute break upstairs.” She approaches me with a straitjacket, a devilish grin on her face. I never get out. My ward is underground, and I’m only allowed to take my break in another empty ward upstairs where patients love to play soccer.

A big, muscled warden stands behind Waltraud. Thomas Ogier. He is bald, and has an angry-red face and a silver tooth he likes to flash whenever he sees me. His biceps are the size of my head. I have a hard time believing he was ever a four-pound baby.

“Slide your arms into the jacket,” Waltraud demands in her German accent, a cigarette puckered between her lips. “Slow and easy, Alice.” She nods at Warden Ogier, in case I misbehave.

I comply obediently and stretch out my arms for her to do whatever she wants. Waltraud twists my right arm slightly and checks the tattoo on my arm. It’s the only tattoo I have. It’s a handwritten sentence that looks like a thick armband from afar. Waltraud feels the need to read it aloud: “‘I can’t go back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.’” I was told I had written it while still believing in Wonderland. “That Alice in Wonderland has really messed with your head,” she says as she puffs smoke into my face.

The tattoo and Waltraud’s mocking is the least of my concerns right now. I let her tie me up, and while she does, I close my eyes. I imagine I am a sixteenth-century princess, some kind of lucky Cinderella, being squeezed into a corset by my chain-smoking servant in a fairy tale castle above ground, just about to go meet my prince charming. Such imagery always helps me breathe. I once thought that it was hope that saved the day, not sanity. I need to cool down before I begin my grand escape.

tina thoughts a review for you

I read the first two books and novella in this series very quickly in preparation for LUX. It was all done within 2 and a half days. I was left reeling. This series is full of twists and turns that you will leave you with more questions than answers. Please note that you can NOT read this book as a standalone. It is is already confusing enough with the lead up to the finale but there are so many parts that build the whole that you cannot see what is going on without all the pieces. This review will be vague but to understand what is happening you need to read the book yourself.

LUX is a complicated web of lies, truth, death, and dreams. This book takes you on a cycle of death and life, one that is confusing but addicting. I could not stop reading until I knew what was happening. The ups and downs chain you to the story, causing you to question what you know and attempt to understand what you don’t. There is a deadly family secret that has been passed down for generations from the first of man. It was interesting to see how Courtney Cole tied this story into ancient stories. There are self-fulfilling prophecies and expectations put on every character we read. Some know what is coming while others flounder in insanity. When you finally think you have figured out what is going on, there is a tangent to chase and a new layer to unfold. When the end happens, you don’t know what is reality and what is insanity.

I feel like there will be strong opinions of this book. You will either love it or hate it. It is so fresh in my mind right now that I am still trying to muddle through the pieces I learned and understand the reality of the situation. Every dream that becomes a reality shifts the focus one way or another. Calla is the central focus but each character is equally as important in their own right. Finn and Dare stand by her in each scenario and her choices never falter. There is major sense of deja vu in this story, one that caught me off guard and made me wonder if I was reading the right book. But in those moments pay close attention. There are nuggets that will expand what is happening and shifts that are occurring.

I feel like my head is a bit of a jumbled mess at the end of this series. My mind has been running in circles to understand what is happening. I even went so far as to try and talk it out with someone and I looked like a lunatic. This series will taunt you and leave bread crumbs that lead to confusion and doubt. As the reader, you must choose with Calla what is reality or insanity. In the end, you will decide their fate.

NOCTE (Nocte #1) Amazon | iBooks | Nook | Kobo | Audible (Add on Goodreads)

My name is Calla Price. I’m eighteen years old, and I’m one half of a whole. My other half—my twin brother, my Finn—is crazy. I love him. More than life, more than anything. And even though I’m terrified he’ll suck me down with him, no one can save him but me. I’m doing all I can to stay afloat in a sea of insanity, but I’m drowning more and more each day. So I reach out for a lifeline. Dare DuBray. He’s my savior and my anti-Christ. His arms are where I feel safe, where I’m afraid, where I belong, where I’m lost. He will heal me, break me, love me and hate me. He has the power to destroy me. Maybe that’s ok. Because I can’t seem to save Finn and love Dare without everyone getting hurt. Why? Because of a secret. A secret I’m so busy trying to figure out, that I never see it coming. You won’t either.

VERUM (Nocte #2) Amazon | iBooks | Nook | Kobo | Audible (Add on Goodreads)

The truth shall set you free.
My name is Calla Price and I’m drowning.
My new world is a dark, dark ocean and I’m being pulled under by secrets.
Can I trust anyone? I don’t know anymore.
The lies are spirals. They twist and turn, binding me with their thorns and serpentine tongues. And just when I think I have it figured out, everything is pulled out from under me.
I’m entangled in the darkness.
But the truth will set me free.
It’s just ahead of me, so close I can touch it. But even though it shines and glimmers, it has glistening fangs and I know it will shred me.
Are you scared?
I am.

INITIUM (Nocte #2.5) Amazon | iBooks | Nook | Kobo (Add on Goodreads)

I never knew what the consequences would be.
I say that like it’s a defense, an excuse.
It’s not. It’s simply the truth.
I never knew what he would become to me.
Through everything, he’s become everything.
My rock, my air, my love.
My everything.
And then….
Things changed.
Because it was wrong.
Because sometimes, our sons must pay for the sins of their fathers.
Or their mothers.
I’m afraid that I’m lost,
that I’m damned.
After you read this, you’ll probably agree.
Really, it doesn’t matter.
All that matters is that I save him.
Because he shouldn’t pay for my sin.
Judge me if you like.
But keep reading.
This is our beginning.
This is where the darkness truly starts.

tina's thoughtsLately it seems as though I have been attracted to stories that reimagine stories from my childhood and cause my adult mind to look at this story in a new light. INSANITY (Mad in Wonderland) is a perfect new and thrilling adaptation for Alice’s story that will leave you reeling. Alice is a mad girl, a girl who lives in an asylum at night and is tasked with stopping a ferocious serial killer during the day, traveling to and fro to stop one of the many monsters from Wonderland. This story brings an intriguing twist to the Alice in Wonderland tale so many have heard since childhood. I don’t know if I can truly describe how surprised and absolutely delighted I was by this book. Cameron Jace is a genius and I am so excited for more of those series!

This story is written so well. As you read it feels like you are truly mad, falling down the never ending rabbit hole with Alice. It has so many twists and turns, surprises and curious moments. It seems as though you finally understand something and then suddenly you question everything you have learned so far. The writing and story add such depth of creativity as you dive into this world.

Alice is a bit of a different character than I have ever seen before. She is intriguing and her character development is so well thought out and portrayed. I loved how certain elements of the story are true to the original but Jace takes those elements and creates a world where Wonderland Monsters are lurking about. I loved Alice’s innocence within the sane world and her depth. I loved her world view and thought processes.

This books adds so many fantastical elements that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Many of our favorites are reinvented in such creative ways. The madness you read about in the original story is taken a step further into our present world and allowed to develop into something sinister and insane. I enjoyed that you never truly knew what would come next. Some plot lines are expected whereas others were a twist that takes the reader deeper into a world that has merged Wonderland with modern society, with a healthy dose of insanity thrown in.

This book is an incredible YA novel that will fascinate you completely. It will mess with your mind and take you deep into the world of madness. Fans of Alice will enjoy this new adaptation and be ready for more adventures and answers at the end. I cannot wait to read more of this series and see where Cameron Jace will lead us.
