All but a hookah-smoking professor named Carter Pillar who believes he can prove her sanity by decoding Lewis Carroll’s paintings, photographs, and finding Wonderland’s real whereabouts.

Professor Caterpillar persuades the asylum that Alice can save lives and catch the Wonderland Monsters now reincarnated in modern day criminals. In order to do so, Alice leads a double life: an Oxford university student by day, a mad girl in an asylum by night. The line between sanity and insanity thins when she meets Jack Diamond, an arrogant college student who believes that nonsense is an actual science.

excerpt alertUnderground Ward, the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum, Oxford

The writing on the wall says it’s January 14. I am not sure what year. I haven’t been sure of many things lately, but I’m wondering if it’s my handwriting I’m looking at.

There is an exquisite-looking key drawn underneath the date. It’s carved with a sharp instrument, probably a broken mirror. I couldn’t have written this. I’m terrified of mirrors. They love to call it Catoptrophobia around here.

Unlike those of the regular patients in the asylum, my room is windowless, stripped down to a single mattress in the middle, a sink, and bucket for peeing—or puking—when necessary. The tiles on the floor are black and white squares, like a chessboard. I never step on black. Always white. Again, I’m not sure why.

The walls are smeared with a greasy, pale green everywhere. I wonder if it’s the previous patient’s brains spattered all over from shock therapy.
In the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum, politely known as the Warneford Hospital, the doctors have a fondness for shock therapy. They love watching patients with bulging eyes and shivering limbs begging for relief from the electricity. It makes me question who is really mad here.

It’s been a while since I was sent to shock therapy myself. Dr. Tom Truckle, my supervising physician, said I don’t need it anymore, particularly after I stopped mentioning Wonderland. He told me that I used to talk about it all the time; a dangerous place I claim I had been whisked away to, when my elder sister lost me when I was seven.

Truth is, I don’t remember this Wonderland they are talking about. I don’t even know why I am here. My oldest vivid memory is from a week ago. Before that, it’s all a purple haze.

I have only one friend in this asylum. It’s not a doctor or a nurse. And it’s not a human. It doesn’t hate, envy, or point a finger at you. My friend is an orange flower I keep in a pot—a Tiger Lily I can’t live without. I keep it safe next to a small crack in the wall, where a single ray of sun sneaks through for only ten minutes a day. It might not be enough light to grow a flower, but my Tiger Lily is a tough girl.

Each day I save half of the water they give me for my flower. As for me, better thirsty than mad. My orange flower is also my personal rain check for my sanity. If I talk to her and she doesn’t reply, I know I am not hallucinating. If she talks back to me, all kinds of nonsense starts to happen. Insanity prevails. There must be a reason why I am here. It doesn’t mean I will easily give in to such a fate.

“Alice Pleasance Wonder. Are you ready?” The nurse knocks with her electric prod on my steel door. Her name is Waltraud Wagner. She is German. Everything she says sounds like a threat, and she smells like smoke. My fellow mad people say she is a Nazi—that she used to kill her own patients back in Germany. “Get avay vrom za dor. I’m coming in,” she demands.

As I listen to the rattling of her large keychain, my heart pounds in my chest. The turn of the key makes me want to swallow. When the door opens, all I can think of is choking her before she begins to hurt me. Sadly, her neck is too thick for my nimble hands. I stare at her almost-square figure for a moment. Everything about her is four sizes too big. All except her feet, which are as small as mine. My sympathies, little feet.

“Time for your daily ten-minute break upstairs.” She approaches me with a straitjacket, a devilish grin on her face. I never get out. My ward is underground, and I’m only allowed to take my break in another empty ward upstairs where patients love to play soccer.

A big, muscled warden stands behind Waltraud. Thomas Ogier. He is bald, and has an angry-red face and a silver tooth he likes to flash whenever he sees me. His biceps are the size of my head. I have a hard time believing he was ever a four-pound baby.

“Slide your arms into the jacket,” Waltraud demands in her German accent, a cigarette puckered between her lips. “Slow and easy, Alice.” She nods at Warden Ogier, in case I misbehave.

I comply obediently and stretch out my arms for her to do whatever she wants. Waltraud twists my right arm slightly and checks the tattoo on my arm. It’s the only tattoo I have. It’s a handwritten sentence that looks like a thick armband from afar. Waltraud feels the need to read it aloud: “‘I can’t go back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.’” I was told I had written it while still believing in Wonderland. “That Alice in Wonderland has really messed with your head,” she says as she puffs smoke into my face.

The tattoo and Waltraud’s mocking is the least of my concerns right now. I let her tie me up, and while she does, I close my eyes. I imagine I am a sixteenth-century princess, some kind of lucky Cinderella, being squeezed into a corset by my chain-smoking servant in a fairy tale castle above ground, just about to go meet my prince charming. Such imagery always helps me breathe. I once thought that it was hope that saved the day, not sanity. I need to cool down before I begin my grand escape.

“She’s not my daughter.” The Pillar purses his lips. He’s pissed at me. I know it. But you know what? I love the mushrooms’ effect. Because I don’t freakin’ care. “Don’t pay attention to her.”

“I’m beginning to lose my patience,” the machine gun man says. “You don’t know the password, and your daughter is a lunatic.”

“I told you she isn’t my daughter,” I hear the Pillar say while I’m trying to catch a diamond from the sky. “And I don’t know the answer to your puzzle. Divide a loaf by a knife? What kind of mathematical question is that?”

“Wrong answer.” The man is about to shoot the Pillar while I’m chasing stars.

This is when I find myself standing before the Pillar to protect him. “You will not shoot my father!” I have no idea what I am saying, or why I am saying it. It’s strange that in the middle of my hallucination I care for the Pillar.

“Tell her to move, or I will shoot you both,” the machine gun man warns.

Then another totally bonkers thing happens. This time it’s too insane to swallow.

“Tell you what? You look like you’re itching to shoot someone today,” the Pillar says, pushing me away toward the man. “Why not shoot her, and let me pass?”

Suddenly, I am two feet away from the machine gun itself, unable to determine if what I just heard was part of my hallucination or for real.

My attempt to turn back and confront the Pillar goes out the window when the machine gun man decides he’s had it with me.

He shoots me straight in the chest.

THE FORGOTTEN MOUNTAIN is an Adult Romantic Fairy Tale, full of adventure and fantasy and the third book in Heather’s The Collectors’ Society Series! Heather asked us who we would like to see recruited into the Society and my mind started to whirl. So many different options came to mind. I thought of Ransom (from CS Lewis Out of the Silent Planet) to the greats like Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, and Robinson Caruso. I jumped across the ocean and thought about Scheherazade, the beautiful storyteller from Arabian Nights. Then I thought about Anne Shirley and her happy Green Gables. After much deliberation (and full circle back to where I began), I went with a young woman who shaped my childhood and created a strong willed and independent young girl with a passion for reading. For my recruit, I give you the wonderful Nancy Drew.

tina's thoughtsLately it seems as though I have been attracted to stories that reimagine stories from my childhood and cause my adult mind to look at this story in a new light. INSANITY (Mad in Wonderland) is a perfect new and thrilling adaptation for Alice’s story that will leave you reeling. Alice is a mad girl, a girl who lives in an asylum at night and is tasked with stopping a ferocious serial killer during the day, traveling to and fro to stop one of the many monsters from Wonderland. This story brings an intriguing twist to the Alice in Wonderland tale so many have heard since childhood. I don’t know if I can truly describe how surprised and absolutely delighted I was by this book. Cameron Jace is a genius and I am so excited for more of those series!

This story is written so well. As you read it feels like you are truly mad, falling down the never ending rabbit hole with Alice. It has so many twists and turns, surprises and curious moments. It seems as though you finally understand something and then suddenly you question everything you have learned so far. The writing and story add such depth of creativity as you dive into this world.

Alice is a bit of a different character than I have ever seen before. She is intriguing and her character development is so well thought out and portrayed. I loved how certain elements of the story are true to the original but Jace takes those elements and creates a world where Wonderland Monsters are lurking about. I loved Alice’s innocence within the sane world and her depth. I loved her world view and thought processes.

This books adds so many fantastical elements that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Many of our favorites are reinvented in such creative ways. The madness you read about in the original story is taken a step further into our present world and allowed to develop into something sinister and insane. I enjoyed that you never truly knew what would come next. Some plot lines are expected whereas others were a twist that takes the reader deeper into a world that has merged Wonderland with modern society, with a healthy dose of insanity thrown in.

This book is an incredible YA novel that will fascinate you completely. It will mess with your mind and take you deep into the world of madness. Fans of Alice will enjoy this new adaptation and be ready for more adventures and answers at the end. I cannot wait to read more of this series and see where Cameron Jace will lead us.

Tina's Thoughts... A review for you

THE COLLECTOR’S SOCIETY is a fantastic story that will change how you read your favorite classic fairytales. It is a tale of fantasy at its finest, filled with adventure, mystery and romance. This book will forever be one of my favorite fairytale adaptions. It is smart, whimsical, and  so well written. Heather Lyons has jumped into the category of guaranteed one click purchases with this story!

When this story begins, we find Alice from the beloved childhood stories of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass in an asylum attempting to piece her life back together after returning from Wonderland to England. She is a reserved and introspective 25 year old woman who has seen and experienced things that most could never imagine. She is set to leave the asylum soon after 6 months of help and monitoring and try to pick the pieces of her life and begin again. Fate however has other plans and a mysterious man appears telling her that she alone can save Wonderland from a horrible fate. Alice embarks on a journey that will bring her to face with her past, causing her to stand firm in the present, and hope for a new future.

How do I even begin to describe this book that I have fallen in love with? It was so much more than I could have ever hoped for. Heather Lyons takes our favorite childhood stories and classic literature and breathes new life into them, allowing them to grow and adapt to our adult ideals and mentalities. It is such a needed breathe of fresh air in the genre of fantasy and I want more!

The premise of the story is so refreshing  and wonderfully unique. The idea that out favorite stories come alive and live in an alternate reality is every book lovers dream. This story allows us to take things a step further and imagine what it would be like if our literary favorites interacted. The concept of each beloved story having a Timeline, a continued story and life, is such a smart and wonderful idea.  The Collector’s Society sole purpose is to protect the beloved Timelines and retrieve the catalyst from each story, the item that must be protected at all costs in order for the Timeline to continue into the future. The chosen defenders of each catalyst brings a smile to the readers face! You cannot help but dive into this story and soak up every wonderful second!

The use of other literary characters to create the Society was fascinating. While reading the different scenes and  interactions, I found myself trying to figure out what story each person was from and what role they played in the process of saving Timelines. Each character was written true to their original story but allowed to grow and develop into something so much more. Alice, Finn, Victor, Mary, Wendy, Mr. Van Bunt and so many more brought a new retelling of their famous tales into a fascinating light.

Alice was a perfectly written heroine. It was a captivating re-telling of her life, allowing us to reshape the Alice of our childhood and breathe new life into the adult character. She was strong and fearless, yet broken and nervous about what would happen in life. Her curiosity and thought processes allowed the reader to delve deeper into her tale. Alice was not my favorite childhood character growing up but after this book, I would have to re-read her stories and reconsider. She is a fighter and a woman who toes the line of reality and madness, forever living with the memory of Wonderland.

Finn was the perfect hero to this story. His quiet strength and motivation were so well portrayed. His partnership at the Society with Alice allowed the reader to delve into his personality, to understand his motivation and smile at the genuine thoughtfulness and kindness he constantly displayed.  His knowledge of his heritage coupled with his new reality and life in New York takes the literary character of Huckleberry Finn to new heights. He is the perfect counterpart to Alice. Together they accomplish so much and create a lasting partnership that is necessary to save the different Timelines and specifically Wonderland. He allows Alice the anchor she needs to accept her fate and be strong in the face of chaos and confusion.

Romance, adventure, suspense and fantasy: this story has it all. It will leave you hungry for more! I hope this is the beginning of a fabulous series, one where our favorite literary friends are brought to life, fresh from the pages of our favorite books! If you enjoy fairytales and stories of time travel and adventure then you need to read this story. It will blow your mind! The premise of this tale is unique and will leave you smiling with the memories of your childhood and adventures of old.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR-2

“Do you find my ability to converse lacking, Doctor?”

He chuckles softly, no doubt remembering how I wasn’t chatty with anyone, himself included, for the first month of my stay. To be fair, it is difficult to carry on an invigorating discussion when one is shaking so hard from withdrawals they fear they might shatter into thousands of painful pieces before a single word can be uttered. Plus, there was the whole bit of how once I did open up, I raved liked a lunatic about things no normal person could imagine being true.

“Certainly not,” he says to me. “But as I must stay at the Pleasance and you must go forth into the world, it will do you good to practice on somebody new.”

“Then send in one of the orderlies. Or one of the nurses. I’ll happily chat with a staff member.”

One of his bushy, out-of-control eyebrows lifts high into his forehead.

“There are people out there who are quite content being solitary,” I point out. “Who do not need to converse with anybody but themselves and their dogs.”

He sets his pen down. “What about cats?”

Rigor mortis sets in ever so briefly at this question.

“You father said you were quite fond of cats growing up. There was one in particular that you favored. Dinah, was it not?”

“I’m—” I have to clear my throat. “Lately, I wonder if perhaps I’m more of a dog person after all.”
