tina thoughts a review for you

Sometimes a girl just needs to read a book with a strong female character and a fun fantasy twist that is both exciting and daring. Pirate Princess is a fantastic young adult story that will appeal to readers both young and old. This story has a fantastic set of people and exciting adventures that will take you on a ride that you did not see coming.

This book has everything I expected and more. Tilia is a fantastic young adult heroine. She is smart, resourceful, and kind. She is a young woman who embraces who she is and learns to be true to herself, no matter the cost. Tilia has a strong female role that is a great example of a fierce warrior and beautiful princess. I loved how she pushed against the stereotypical norms of society in her world and was loved and supported by those around her. Tilia’s character is what makes this story so great. She is a girl seeking adventure and learning to step into her role in life. I loved watching her experience life and grow into a young woman. In this book we see her fall in love and embrace her magical abilities and fighting skills. We see her learn to balance every part of who she is and learn to thrive in that role.

I loved the excitement of the pirate realm and the world this book presents in general. There is danger, intrigue, and magic. When you roll all those aspects into one, you are bound to have an exciting tale of adventure. This book took several twists and turns I did not anticipate, giving the reader more than they expected. I loved how Catherine takes the world we dive into and makes it tangible. You see the realities of a girl growing up and her excitement for what is next. When that is coupled with magic and pirates, you know that there is going to be some exciting themes to enjoy.

Another aspect I loved of this story is the community around Tilia. Every person that we meet in this story is significant. They all weave in and out of Tilia’s story, enlightening the reader on more of her who she is and explaining the way that she reacts. I loved her Aunt and Uncle and Faxon. These three are so important in her life and to see them interact and have fun was heartwarming. I love getting to meet the different pirates and friends Tilia comes into contact with. Each encounter adds depth to the story and many times allows for a new direction in the story. There are plot twists you expect and some that you will not see coming.

Pirate Princess is a daring young adult story of a young woman who is growing into her rightful place in the world. Tilia is fierce and lovable, surrounding herself with characters that enhance her life. This story is not short on exciting destinations and stories of old, all of which create a book that will grab your attention. I am excited to see more of Tilia, Finn, Captain Rocco, and all the royalty of the land in future stories from Catherine Banks!

“You aren’t going to force me into an arranged marriage, are you?” I asked them.

Esmeralda looked like I had smacked her. “Of course not!”

“We haven’t done arranged marriages in a century,” Jared said.

I exhaled. “Well, my dad wasn’t sure and told me to be prepared just in case.”

“Does your dad do arranged marriages?” Esmeralda asked.

I shook my head. “No.”

“Well you don’t have to worry about that,” Jared said, “We aren’t going to force you to do anything.”

“Except not be a pirate,” I fake pouted.

Esmeralda laughed. “Except that.”

“Well, I guess I’m okay with that. Most pirates don’t have very long careers anyways,” I said.

“Speaking of marriage,” Esmeralda said, moving her horse closer to mine. “Technically we are supposed to have a ball for your seventeenth birthday so that all of the available men can come so you can start looking for a suitor.”

“WHAT?” I asked in an almost scream.

“You don’t want a boyfriend?” Faxon asked.

I blushed and said, “I just didn’t know it was a formal thing and, uh, hadn’t really thought about it yet.” That was a lie. I thought about boys like every teenage girl did, but my options were slim at the Capitol.

“Well, it’s a tradition and I thought I would let you know now that we’ll be having it while we are in Markleville,” Esmeralda said.

“I don’t have a dress,” I said, hoping that would cancel the plans until we returned home, “I didn’t bring one.”

“That’s fine. I will have one made for you,” Jared offered.

How generous. Ugh. “But if I find a guy I like in Markleville, I won’t even be able to see him when we return to the Capitol,” I said.

“That is where the true romance is supposed to begin,” Esmeralda said with a smile. “They have to try to keep you interested with letters and poems and gifts.”

“It’s very tedious,” Jared said.

“Only because you had to find others to write poems for you,” Faxon said.

“I knew you didn’t write that poem!” Esmeralda said with a triumphant shout.

“I’m going to skin you, Faxon,” Jared growled.

“It’s time she learned the truth,” Faxon said.

“I already knew,” Esmeralda said, “I just never had confirmation.”

“How did you know?” Jared asked.

“You haven’t written me a poem once since then. Every other guy who wrote me a poem continued to write them, not just one,” she said honestly.

“Who else wrote you poems?” Jared asked with crossed arms jealously.

“Yes, I’m really looking forward to this,” I muttered.

Griffin laughed.

“Not every man is like him,” Faxon said defensively.

“I can’t believe you helped him,” Esmeralda said.

“I’m a good friend,” he said with a shrug, “it’s a curse.”

tina's thoughts

I became an instant Samantha Young fan when I read On Dublin Street. Her writing evokes emotion, passion, and connection. When I saw that she had a standalone book in the works, I could not contain my excitement, and the wait was worth it! HERO is a beautiful story between Caine Carroway, the cut throat CEO who has risen from the ashes of a horrific childhood, and Alexis Holland, the daughter of the man who destroyed Caine’s life.

HERO is incredible. It is filled with so much tension and power. Caine is the stereotypical Alpha male but there is so much more to him than previously thought. He can feel deeply but refuses to allow it to be a reality or affect his life. He is a man of extreme focus, passion, and determination. He is a man who has seen the darkness of the world and overcome that darkness to be the ruler of the corporate world.  Alexis is a woman attempting to keep the pieces of her life from shattering further.  Her life has been full of lies and rejection from the people she so desperately wanted love form. She is a secret and this secret slowly destroys her heart. When you put together two such fantastic characters, you are in for an incredibly moving story. When reading this book, you cannot help but experiences every single emotion that leaps off the page. There is hurt, anger, hopelessness, fear, desperation. There is also lust, devotion, chemistry, love, and hope.

Not only are the characters incredible, the themes and situations throughout the story are well developed and wonderful. I will admit when I first read the synopsis a while back, I wondered how Samantha would be able to make this book stand out amongst the Alpha male romances being published by the truckloads. Let’s just say she blew them all out of the water. This story has the incredible sexy moments and the powerful alpha male, but it also has a strong, smartass female lead that will steal your heart. There is a deep plot and not everything is rainbows. It is heart breaking but so beautifully broken.

This book has it all: intrigue, drama, angst, romance, smoldering moments, and revelation. While I was reading this story, I kept thinking to myself, this feels like so much more than any of Samantha’s past books, and that is saying something considering the On Dublin Street series is intricate and deep. Somehow she has taken this book and created such a deeply powerful story that will live in our hearts for a long time to come. I just finished this book and I am already craving another Samantha Young novel!

See just how steamy Braden is…

_________________________________________

Braden gifted me  a roguish smile. “I never apologize unless I mean it. And I’m not apologizing  for this. It’s been the highlight of my week. Possibly my year.” His grin was so easy-going-coaxing me to smile back at him.

__________________________________________

Braden’s hand tightened around mine, his pale eyes darkened, and I knew…he wanted me too. “Fine,” he muttered, a dangerous quality entering his expression as he leaned down, his words puffing against my mouth he was so close. “I can do this. If you can pretend, I can pretend.”— Our attraction was nuclear. I had never known anything like it.

___________________________________________

In response, he brushed his thumb over my mouth and smiled at me with his eyes before letting go. And then, we were two friends spending time together. we talked about all the usual stuff. Music. Movies. Books. Hobbies. Friends. We made each other laugh. We had fun. But it was the littler things. Braden was careful to make sure that he never asked anything he knew I wouldn’t answer. And when I stumbled over a questions because it related to the past, he cracked a joke and changed the subject. This was a smart man.

I felt something shift in my expression as he looked at me, something that made my breath catch. He caught the sound with his mouth as he dipped his head to kiss me slowly, languorously. Tenderly.

Charley Redford was just an ordinary girl until Jake Caplin moved to her small town in Indiana and convinced her she was extraordinary. Almost from day one Jake pulled Charley into the deep and promised he was right there with her. But when a tragic incident darkened Jake’s life he waded out into the shallows and left Charley behind.
Almost four years later Charley thinks she’s moved on. That is until she takes a study year abroad in Edinburgh and bumps into none other than Jake Caplin at a party with his new girlfriend. The bad-boy-turned-good attempts to convince Charley to forgive him, and as her best friend starts spending time with Jake’s, Charley calls a truce, only to find herself tumbling back into a friendship with him.
As they grow closer, the spark between them flares and begins playing havoc with their lives and relationships. When jealousy and longing rear their destructive heads, Charley and Jake struggle to come to grips with what they mean to one another.
And even if they work it out, there is no guarantee Charley will ever trust Jake to lead her back into the deep…

Lynne’s Thoughts

New adult.  The genre that brings up many questions.  Oftentimes I read new adult novels that feel like adult novels but with “younger” characters.  This has always somewhat bothered me.  I don’t think new adult novels should feel like adult novels, because they’re not.  So when I decided to read Samantha Young’s NA novel, I had already resolved in my head that it would read a lot like her On Dublin Street series.  While the writing style is the similar, I feel  Young captured the new adult spirit flawlessly.  I did not feel like Charley and Jake were older than they are.  They did not feel on the same age or maturity level of Joss, Braden, and their friends.  The angst, romance, and hotness factors were all in Into The Deep just like her adult novels, but it felt like I was reading about 20 year-olds.  I’ve always hated watching TV shows about high school students where they act like they are 30.  College age students are all over the place!  They make mistakes constantly, they’re scared of everything, and totally abuse their parentless freedom.  They shouldn’t act and respond to situations like adults because they maybe adults legally, but they aren’t emotionally.  This is truth coming from the views of a 21 year old.  I am not an adult.  I may act like it, but I’m not.  Therefore feeling the maturity difference in characters between these two series was incredibly refreshing.  Charley does stupid stuff, Jake does stupid stuff.  They are both so emotionally heightened, it isn’t even funny.  But you know what? I loved it.  I loved that we got to return to Edinburgh.  I love that they created a tight knit group of friends that I want to know more about.  I loved that Charley and Jake were so in love with each other, it was infuriating that they weren’t together.  Especially because you knew their friends were annoyed as well.  Charley and Jake’s issues were very real, because what sixteen year old doesn’t make the stupidest decisions then regret them later?  Overall, Into The Deep was lovely, engaging, and real.  I truly loved it.  If you have read the On Dublin Street series, I would highly recommend this book.  The angst, family-like friend group, and extremely likable characters that Young cultivates in that series is ever present in this one as well.  I cannot wait for the conclusion of this series with Out Of The Shallows, coming April 2014!

Review: Before Jamaica Lane (On Dublin Street, #3) by Samantha Young

17766752

Before Jamaica Lane synopsis from Goodreads

Despite her outgoing demeanor, Olivia is painfully insecure around the opposite sex—usually, she can’t get up the nerve to approach guys she’s interested in. But moving to Edinburgh has given her a new start, and, after she develops a crush on a sexy postgrad, she decides it’s time to push past her fears and go after what she wants.

Nate Sawyer is a gorgeous player who never commits, but to his close friends, he’s as loyal as they come. So when Olivia turns to him with her relationship woes, he offers to instruct her in the art of flirting and to help her become more sexually confident.

The friendly education in seduction soon grows into an intense and hot romance. But then Nate’s past and commitment issues rear their ugly heads, and Olivia is left broken-hearted. When Nate realizes he’s made the biggest mistake of his life, he will have to work harder than he ever has before to entice his best friend into falling back in love with him—or he may lose her forever…

Tina’s Thoughts

I have loved this series so far and was super excited about this latest installment to the On Dublin Street series. I love how each book and novella overlaps in such a way that teases at another characters story and the full details are revealed later in each following book and novella. I loved Olivia when she was first introduced and enjoyed the type of innocence and grounded wisdom she brought to the storyline. She was the fresh face from America looking for a fresh start and a place to call her own. I was excited when I found out that Nate would be the hero of this story as well. These two have such a fabulous relationship. I loved their easy banter. The continual game of “Would you rather…” literally made me laugh out loud. Not only did they have fun together, they had a deep connection that comes from losing someone you loved deeply. It was refreshing to Olivia learn to love herself and embrace her body in such a way that was inspiring to read about. I was a bit worried about the overdone storyline of “manwhore meets girl and they fall in love”, but there were enough unique quirky fun and smexy parts that I was amused and emotionally drawn in. Watching their story unfold was explosive. Their connection was already deep and adding in the physical aspect made it even stronger. I loved seeing the continuation of Joss and Braden’s story as well as Adam and Ellie and Jo and Cam. I love to watch their friendships grow as they create a loving and healthy familial unit. Be sure to check out this series!
